Can jump rope substitute jogging/running for ring stamina and endurance?

Can you reach that 12 round level stamina with just jump ropes?

No, once you get your rhythm down, skipping isnt difficult at all, doesnt really get your heart rate up. Doesn't compare to running for me.

Depends on how fast your jumping and if you have a weighted rope. If you push yourself jumping rope you can get the heart rate up enough. A weighted rope will give you a good upper body workout and of course, your calves as well. Running is working a different part of the leg including the calves. Running works more the upper leg and glutes but not as much the upper body. Both work the core to a lesser degree. Push yourself jumping rope for 25 or 30mins, using different skipping patterns and see if it feels like a good workout. I think a person could get in pretty good shape from just jumping rope if they really try to push themselves. That said, it does not really take the place of running because of the different muscles used. Stationary bike is good if your having some knee problems or something that's keeping you from running. Burpees(squat thrusts) with an optional jump and push up are good.

For us skipping rope is considered as a rest, we do it when "resting" between various exercises, or between rounds. And 12 round stamina doesn't have to do anything with being able to run given distance or skipping the rope, there are many more factors. Only many rounds spent boxing with good opponents can prepare you.

You'd have to do lots and lots of double jumps to get your heart up to a running level.

Plus skipping can get mundane; with running you do have a changing view

the easiest answer is... no, you cannot substitute for roadwork

any other answer would be irresponsible

is there something wrong with your knee's... or is it motivation?

some fighters use swimming as a supplement, especially if they have knee problems... and James Toney never did roadwork... but they are exceptions...

Toneys camp started with sparring lol... sparring was his main/only preparation in camp... but you need to realize, that will take it's toll... that is why his speech is slurred, from the thousands of hours sparring

we used to tell kids... run half a block, then walk half a block... repeat

also, you can mix up your roadwork and still get the benefit... so, 4 half-mile runs spread throughout the day... is a 2 mile run

for some, roadwork is very hard.... and the worst part of training... but yea, hard luck... that is what it takes to succeed

if you are cutting corners, and your opponent is not... then he will likely have a significant advantage... you will reap what you sow !

how important is it?... the 2 fittest fighters that I ever saw were Mayweather and Calzaghe... BOTH retired undefeated with a combined record of 96-0... both were freaks who understood exactly how important fitness was

another example... the Diaz boys... those MMA dudes need to train MANY different styles... they have many different coaches... standup, wrestling, bjj, judo, muay thai, etc... and yet, both of those guys spend more time working on fitness than EVERYTHING else combined

get that roadwork done soldier !! no excuses !!

No substitute for jogging. There’s a reason why many avoid it. It’s hard at the beginning but once you get your rhythm you can’t do without it. Skipping is good but only as an addition to jogging and other things. Don’t let anyone lie to you jogging is boxing, tried and tested. It’s the foundation where everything is built upon.

No, and also treadmill running is far inferior to actual road running.

Hey, i was in the same boat with the jogging a while ago, was searching for subs all the time.

Tried to sub with Skipping, but it just doesn't work the same way as running does, even when you do rope sprints, it takes way longer to bring your heart rate up when compared to running or even plain jogging.

I have started a proper Roadwork training plan, with running 3 times a week, and now after a month i feel a big difference in the ring, where previously 3 -4 rounds were tough to get through, this time I felt that i could go even for 2 -3 rounds more.

2 days ago I wanted to compare the rope and the running with my heart rate Monitor and strap, so normal skipping, even though its quite fast would bring my HR to 130 - 135, compared to jogging where i am running quite fast but sustainable at HR 145 - 155 almost from the get go.

In order to make skipping more aerobically demanding i add calisthenics or plyometrics in between rounds.

You could do the following 12 X 3 min skipping, 1 minute break ( Burpees WITH PUSHUP, start with 10 and build up to 20 or 1 minute straight) be careful in the case of burpess because when you get tired you can hurt your back.

Please note that skipping cant substitute running, but it can add to it, so every time you are in the gym - skip, outside of the gym you should be running.

Skip 3 days, run 3 days out of these days : 1 skip day do sprints, 1 run day do sprints / hill sprints, dont do sprint days back to back.

Give it a go for about 3 -4 months, and build your running time to 1 - 1.5 hours per run.
