Study About Fitness: Women Are Better Athletes Than Men

    Latest story in Newsweek

    What say you?

In a new chapter in the battle of the ***es, research sought to determine which gender was more athletic, at least in one key measure of fitness, and the answer seems to be women, according to researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

According to the new research, young women are able to process oxygen faster than young men. Their muscles appear to absorb oxygen from the blood more quickly. This helps ease the strain on our body’s cells and is one of the ways aerobic fitness is measured.

For the study, which was very small, researchers recruited nine young males and 9 females, all roughly in their mid-20s. Females and males were of similar weights within their own genders. Everyone participated in the same exercise—walking on a treadmill—and scientists compared oxygen consumption and extraction in both genders during the workout. They found that the women were consistently more efficient than men, as they processed oxygen 30 percent faster.

“The findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men’s bodies are more naturally athletic,” said study co-author and kinesiologist Thomas Beltrame, in a statement.

Prior research has shown that one of the biggest benefits of exercise is that it improves our ability to use oxygen. As we work out, our lungs draw in oxygen to give us energy and remove carbon dioxide, which is essentially waste that’s created during the process. Oxygen is also supplied to our muscles via the heart and blood.

“We found that women’s muscles extract oxygen from the blood faster, which, scientifically speaking, indicates a superior aerobic system,” added study co-author and applied health scientist Richard Hughson, in the statement.

As the press release notes, processing oxygen at a quicker speed lowers muscle fatigue and perceived effort. It can also boost your athletic abilities.

The researchers are clear that their findings don’t offer up any answers on why women appear to hold this advantage over men. However, they do believe that their research could be the starting point of additional research and more personalized training programs for athletes.

“While we don’t know why women have faster oxygen uptake, this study shakes up conventional wisdom,” said Beltrame. “It could change the way we approach assessment and athletic training down the road.”

This isn't the first time science has shown that women may have greater fitness capabilities than men. A review of studies in 2016 indicated that females can exercise for longer periods of time than males, according to Health.

Study co-author and exercise scientist Sandra Hunter told the ****zine that men have an advantage when it comes to building muscle, but when it comes to extended performance, women shine.

“I may not be able to bench-press the same amount of weight as a big muscle-bound guy, but if you ask us both to perform a contraction at 100 percent of our maximum strength and sustain it as long as we can, I should be able to outperform him," Hunter told Health.

She echoed that new research, such as this current study, could lead to new training programs based on gender. “The bottom line of training or rehab is that you have to fatigue a muscle in order to increase its strength,” Hunter told the ****zine. “So if men and women fatigue differently, they should be treated differently.”

If this were true then females would run faster times in long distance like marathons, 800 metres, 1500m, 5000m, 10 000m etc etc.

But the fact is, male records are FAR superior to females.

    Point: This study is nonsense.

Exactly, what does that study prove if the practice shows completely different results. That study hold absolutely no weight whatsoever as far as I'm concerned.

      Feminist society at it again.

Men have bigger hearts and lungs in proportion to their size than women. Women having faster oxygen uptake could be natures way of compensating for that ... or vice versa, I guess.

          Muscle-bound guy .. "Grrrr .. I can bench press 400lbs!"

Health scientist .. "How many reps?"

          Muscle-bound guy .. "Huh? Only one rep ... it's 400 freaking lbs!"

Girl ... "Oh dear .. I can only bench press 40lbs"

Health scientist .. "How many reps?"

          Girl ... "Three reps!"

Health scientist ... "Hey everybody, I just proved that girls are 3 times stronger than guys!"

Check Out the records for the highest VO2 maxes ever recorded! Men hold all these records!

But when you say young women, if these experiment was conducted on young girls Pre-puberty then? Women may be better athletes in certain area's of course! And there are always some women that will not fit the script, there are some great female athletes!

Here is a link to some V02max records, I am not sure whether it is 100% up to date! But as you can see men, have record higher V02 maxes!

I boxed with a womens champion back in the day, it was like boxing a semi-******ed porcelain doll. It was taking candy from a baby.

It is indirectly disrespectful to women too!

When results in aerobic/endurance related sports favour men, from club/amateur level to world class; a study that promotes a superior aerobic capacity to women would surely indicate that the disparity in times is down to laziness or a lack of willingness to give their all on the part of women.

                Absolute rubbish!

Men generally do have the upper hand in all forms of athletic performance at this point in time, but the gap is narrowing at a rapid rate.

Very interesting. Those very high scores were all recorded during extremely strenous and physically demanding activity .. whereas the study referred to in this thread only measured oxygen uptake while walking on a treadmill.

True. Either this study is misleading or men must have a lot more will power than women. But that would be ***ist, so ...
