I'm new here and will be joining a local boxing gym within the month and I'm looking to get a head start along with a style of fighting that fits my natural skills and personality. I know I'll need to train everything, from my power to my footwork, defense to technique but for now I'm going to try and focus on what I can already do and try and become more well rounded once I'm in a gym with trainers and boxers. I'm 6'0, 140-150 (did a lot of drugs in the past) and have medium reach.
the only real thing I got going for me is I'm just plain tough (dislike saying it as it is somewhat arrogant), broken bones and didn't realize till months later, used to hold burning hot metal against my arms for awhile because it was warm, etc etc. just take my word for it I suppose. I got heart, never lost a fight by being knocked out or giving up. second fight I was ever in was against a guy who had a couple inches on (height and reach) me, 50 pounds and been boxing for 7-9 years. as expected I got killed, we went three rounds and by the end if it I couldn't see straight, both my eyes were black and my face swelled, I was spitting up pieces of my gums. just brutal. but I kept fighting. I should note I've never been in a fight that lasted less then 10 minutes, all bare knuckle as I have yet to truly box.
otherwise I'm fairly average to poor in my physical attributes. I got fairly good endurance though my lungs are in poor shape, my reflexes are also quite good but I don't know how to use them in a fight and can't dodge or weave in any way really. I'm not inaccurate or accurate, I can punch with decent speed and my footwork is sloppy and I'm not very quick on my feet. my biggest weakness is raw force, punching power. I can't do much damage, but I've always fought aggressive and applied pressure which doesn't work all that great together. another problem is while I have fairly good balance, I don't have the weight or leg strength to stay up after a few big hits. my blocking isn't too bad either but I'm not good at using both my defense and offence at the same time.
hmm, punch wise, I throw a fast but weak jab and don't like it. my cross is fine and is more snapping then crunching. I throw fairly weak hooks, they don't feel natural nor does the jab but my uppercuts are fine. for some reason the most natural punches for me are more centered hookercuts to the chin and body and for being a low weight with also fairly low muscle mass I can dig them in something fierce.
I can't really go with a more technical or skilled style, as I really am quite ****** and don't have much finesse, though fighting seems natural even in a thinking sense but still not a route I'd be well at. I think I'd be a good swarmer, real pressure fighter if I could build up the strength and conditioning but for now I don't know what quite to work on except building those two things. any tips, training, necessary skills or anything else I didn't know of would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
