Soon to be boxer seeking help.

I'm new here and will be joining a local boxing gym within the month and I'm looking to get a head start along with a style of fighting that fits my natural skills and personality. I know I'll need to train everything, from my power to my footwork, defense to technique but for now I'm going to try and focus on what I can already do and try and become more well rounded once I'm in a gym with trainers and boxers. I'm 6'0, 140-150 (did a lot of drugs in the past) and have medium reach.

the only real thing I got going for me is I'm just plain tough (dislike saying it as it is somewhat arrogant), broken bones and didn't realize till months later, used to hold burning hot metal against my arms for awhile because it was warm, etc etc. just take my word for it I suppose. I got heart, never lost a fight by being knocked out or giving up. second fight I was ever in was against a guy who had a couple inches on (height and reach) me, 50 pounds and been boxing for 7-9 years. as expected I got killed, we went three rounds and by the end if it I couldn't see straight, both my eyes were black and my face swelled, I was spitting up pieces of my gums. just brutal. but I kept fighting. I should note I've never been in a fight that lasted less then 10 minutes, all bare knuckle as I have yet to truly box.

otherwise I'm fairly average to poor in my physical attributes. I got fairly good endurance though my lungs are in poor shape, my reflexes are also quite good but I don't know how to use them in a fight and can't dodge or weave in any way really. I'm not inaccurate or accurate, I can punch with decent speed and my footwork is sloppy and I'm not very quick on my feet. my biggest weakness is raw force, punching power. I can't do much damage, but I've always fought aggressive and applied pressure which doesn't work all that great together. another problem is while I have fairly good balance, I don't have the weight or leg strength to stay up after a few big hits. my blocking isn't too bad either but I'm not good at using both my defense and offence at the same time.

hmm, punch wise, I throw a fast but weak jab and don't like it. my cross is fine and is more snapping then crunching. I throw fairly weak hooks, they don't feel natural nor does the jab but my uppercuts are fine. for some reason the most natural punches for me are more centered hookercuts to the chin and body and for being a low weight with also fairly low muscle mass I can dig them in something fierce.

I can't really go with a more technical or skilled style, as I really am quite ****** and don't have much finesse, though fighting seems natural even in a thinking sense but still not a route I'd be well at. I think I'd be a good swarmer, real pressure fighter if I could build up the strength and conditioning but for now I don't know what quite to work on except building those two things. any tips, training, necessary skills or anything else I didn't know of would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I dont recommend you to train on yourself.

ThatŽs just wasted time and energy, cause there will nobody to teach and correct your technique which means months of training goes to waste and then you need another months or weeks to correct it.

    So my instruction are:

    1. Dont train boxing on your own

    2. Get a hold of your addiction - stop smoking, doing drugs and drinking alc

    3. Correct your diet! Most important instruction for a good start as an athlete. Eat healthy. Lots of fruits and vegetables and a lot of carbs.

    4. Do strength training. But dont this ****** 8 reps bodybuilding strength training do explosive strength training.

    5. Go running or do jump rope or any type of cardio exercise

    6. Dont get discuraged! No fighter is born. Tyson was not a born fighter nor Floyd Mayweather. YouŽll learn it all over the years of hard training if you stick with boxing!

    EDIT:

Dont just train one type of fighting style.
Maybe after a year youŽll realize that you are more of a counter puncher, or maybe the Tyson type an agressive counter puncher, maybe a defensive fighter like Floyd.

What IŽm trying to say is that you will develop a personal type of style in the future.

Don't try to figure it out before hand. Everything you think you know about yourself, your style, your abilities, means nothing once you get in there. Be prepared to start at zero. We all think we have this or that going for us and then realize it's a spec of dust compared to what you're about to learn. If you have heart, you'll survive the cardio and intense training. Months of that and you will get a chance to spar. Having heart in an actual fight is the least of your worries right now as the training to get into fight shape is punishing enough to get most people to quit.
I hope it goes well for you. When things get tough, remember why you're doing it.

Street fighting and boxing are 2 different worlds. No one is born a boxer. You need to drop the "I'm really tough" attitude and check yourself. Listen to trainers and apply yourself. It takes a lot of time. The only thing that I recommend is to get in shape first before you show up. It'll make everything easier. Running 20 - 30 min at a time. It helps with the poor lungs.

it's not an attitude it's just my mindset and always has been. I think I'll just go straight for power, get some serious, head ****ing, brutal power. otherwise, I don't think I'll be able to fight like how I want to and what feels natural.

everything will eventually become natural but that takes time and training, so I think it'd be smart to grow my physical ability that will go with the skills and ability I will learn. I can't learn to box, but I can get the skills I need to box good when I do learn.

like others said, best way to prepare yourself is to stop all drug use.

start running every other day along with

push ups, pull up, sprints and ab trainning.

look up body weight exercise routines.

I'm sayin..150 at 6 feet..... that's small. But still..you will have height on people and reach I assume... I would suggest if you are fighting at 154 for instance is utilize your jab. Practice making the jab more of a weapon than a hindrance. A long range style with lots of jabbing and the occasional right hand. Fight tall. Practice fighting tall. At 154 being 6ft you will benefit most from utilizing your relative length and height over others in your weight class. Doesn't hurt to start shadowbox in and start working on your wind with jogging. You can be as scrappy as you wanna be but a famous saying says fatigue turns brave warriors into cowards..or something like that. So getting your wind up is priority numero uno. Oh...and get off the drugs you knucklehead!
