    First time boxing - constant shoots of pain in knuckles/wrist/etc

    This is my first post here but I will definitely be contributing more along the next few days. Looks like a great community and thought Id pick this forum over the dozens out there. Well, to give you the full story, I am an 19 year old guy and just started training in boxing. I have been offered a chance for an exhibition fight in a month or 2 and I'm interested in doing that. I have currently been boxing for around 2 weeks. In the first week, I made a huge mistake. Because I did not have any hand wraps, my trainer told me to just use gloves but to take it VERY easily on the bags. I completely ignored his advice and started punching the bag with all my strength. At first, nothing happened.

    I did this again for a few more classes as I simply thought the hand wraps weren't important. Boy was I wrong.

    In Week 2, I started using the hand wraps properly. Wrapped up correctly. I used the method which involves it going around each finger. We then moved onto pad work with the trainer and in both classes, it was extremely painful. To give you a rough idea, each time I threw a punch or a jab an extreme shoot of pain would go through my fist. This meant that I was not able to punch as hard and had to keep throwing light jabs, etc. My trainer told me to use different gloves, and we did, but the same problem. Each time I punched with full force, there would be a quick sudden pain going through the wrist, and even the knuckles. For example, the middle knuckle along with the others would be very painful. Once I had taken the gloves off, even if I touched my middle/other knuckles with my hand, it was very painful. My trainer told me it was probably because I injured my hands from the hard punching I did the previous week with no wraps. He told me to take some rest.

    I went to a doctors and they said that it was probably tendonitis or something like that, and they said it will go away with natural rest. Therefore, right now I am resting but really eager to go back and start boxing again.

    So, right now, to aid me better, I have purchased some proper 180 wraps, a good pair of gloves, and some wrist wraps and knuckle pads.

    My questions, which I hope you can answer is:

    1. Is it okay if I use a small wrist wrap and knuckle pad, and then roll the boxing hand wraps on top of these? Is this fine?

    2. Are there any ways to make the pain go away? It is on both hands, and the pain is only there each time I through a solid hard enough jab or punch. Light punches are no problem. Each time I throw a solid punch, my knuckles send a shoot of pain through the wrist and it really hurts. Both hands. Is there any quick way to make this disappear? Ice? Bandages?

    3. Am I experiencing something normal? Is this the norm for beginner boxers? I admit I was a bit ****** at the start for not using wraps but am I going to have painful knuckles/wrists for a long time now or?

    4. What hand wrapping technique do you use? Can you share a video to it on Youtube? Right now I am doing the method which goes around each finger.

    Any sort of advice is appreciated, and I just wanted to say thanks again for anyone who helps.

      One of the best things for healing your hands is to soak them in ice water. It'll reduce the inflammation and help ligaments not be as irritated.

      The second thing you should do is stick to only shadow boxing for a week or two until your hands have started healing significantly. Then you can go light on the bags while they finish healing. If you have a hard time restricting yourself to light bag work you should avoid the heavy bag for longer. It's what I did and now that I have better bag gloves and handwraps with more elasticity I haven't had a problem with my hands.

          Resting an injury is a form of dedication and discipline........

          working out whilst injured is a form of lack of discipline, ignorance and disrespect to yourself........

          use bigger padded gloves...........

            I stopped reading when you got to the "exhibition fight" and you've been boxing for 2 weeks!!! try training to get in shape and then learning to box with at least 7 months in the gym prior to an exhibition unless the trainer thinks you are a "natural"
            You have no business in a fight with 2 weeks in a gym. Either you have an attitude problem and someone's going to knock it out of you or your trainer has no clue.
            If your already sparring after 2 weeks your in the wrong gym! Good luck but you need at least a year to learn the basics with sparring and after 7 months to be able to apply them correctly.
            Sounds like your in a mma/boxing gym were everyone is rushed into a fight without proper schooling.

              The exhibition fight is in February. My trainer believes that I will be ready for it if I train for the next 3 1/2 months. My only issue now is how to avoid this pain in my wrist/knuckles.

                  The pain is precisely because of the hard punching without wraps. If the pain is triggered that easily, there's likely a very fine fracture too.

                  The best advice is to not punch anything, I mean nothing at all, for several months. Shadow box and work on fitness in that time. There's real danger the pain will never go so long as you keep doing bag/pad work without proper healing time.

                    I did some bag work today and the pain has started to go away slowly. Did not feel as much pain as before. In fact, it was almost non existent. I find it hard to believe that I need to stay out of punching for several months... if the pain today was starting to go away?
