Jump rope - Calf problems, help required.

    Hi all,

I'm trying to lose weight, I have a controlled diet, I weight train 3 days per week and hit the treadmill 3 days per week. I recently tried some jump rope and my calfs got destroyed, I still had a go the following day and they got even worse in terms of soreness and stifness. I then rested until they were completely fine and had another go, again they got sore quite badly.

I'm not sure if this is normal or how long I should keep going at it until I get used to it. The problem is while my calfs keep getting sore I'm unable to hit the treadmill until I'm fully recovered and also cannot do any weight training to hit my calfs.

I would like to let you know that the most I was able to jump rope before making a mistake is probably around 35 seconds and within a 30 minute period I was jumping rope for around 18 minutes.

Thanks in advance for advice etc...

Concrete and tiles. The trainers I use are Nike, forgot the exact ones but the same ones as seen on 24/7 that Miguel Cotto wears.

Wow, Stop right now. Take some time off to heal and from now on do you jump roping on hardwood floors, carpet, rubber gym matts.

I don't have a choice but to jump rope on the road infront of my house or tiles in my backyard. There is absolutely no space in my house to jump rope. The trainers I use are pretty good and very flexible so I'm certain thats not the issue.

do NOT jump on concrete, bad idea!

Buy some cheap (assuming they'll get dirty outside) aerobics/fitness matts and put them out in front of your house.

btw, nothing wrong with your calfs being sore that's exactly what you need, muscle soreness=good. Of course if the pain is extreme that's no good, but jumproping is an intense workout for the legs and you have to get used to it.

but jumping on concrete will ruin your knees=bad

                This right here.

Another thing is shoes, make sure they give you some support. Boxing boots are good but, if you're not boxing an ordinary pair of running shoes.

StarScr33m, I had the same problem as you. So in my backyard, I got an old car tire and placed a piece of plywood over it, and skipped rope on that. It helped me out a lot.
