    Nephew has started boxing

He's nine years old, 43kg and is 2-0 in 'competition' 1 win by stoppage lol. I reckon he's pretty good with fast hands and surprising power and train him as best i can at home (mainly pads and a little light sparring) I think he needs to work on his fitness though. In one of those fights he won the first two rounds easy but looked wrecked in the 3rd. I reckon jumping rope would probably be the best way to improve that.

Also at just 9 years old how do you feel about stuff like push ups/sit ups etc How many should he be doing and how much is too much?

I'd honestly keep a nine year old away from push ups and situps. Certainly no form of weight training.

Whilst abdominal work is crucial for adults in preparing to absorb body blows, I'd say he is unlikely to be hit with winding blows from similarly aged youngsters. He'll just need to be taught to keep the elbows in and work on his distance.

But running is ideal for fitness training. Anything from sprints to cross country runs are fine for youngsters. Skipping is good too, pad work, shadow boxing. I wouldn't recommend bag work though, his hands will still be developing for the next ten years of his life.

If he fancies sparring with other similarly aged youngsters, I'm sure this would be fine. Its unlikely that he'll pick up anything more than very light bruising or a bloody nose.

But keep training fun.......kids attention spans at nine years of age can vary greatly!!!

im not sure about pushups but i cant imagine they are that bad, i did tae kon do at a young age, maybe a bit older than 10 but not much, and my trainer said do 10 pressups in the morning and 10 at night. one important thing is that weights SHOULDNT nesseseraly be avoided. weights and pushups and any other training method are just tools. whether you use body weight or metal its the same basic thing. the olny thing is with weights you have more control. if you think pushups are too hard at 40kg have him do dumbell bench press with 5kg weights. its basicaly the same exercise but with much less weight. the important thing is to find out for sure if its ok and to make sure his form is perfect

as for fitness its really important to develop a good aerobic base. esspecialy at a young age as it is harder to generate aerobic power untill at least 16 for most people, so see if you can get him to go for long bike rides. its gunna be hard to get him to want to do that but if you can it would be great

Special care and attention is needed for 9 years old under supervision of trainer and or coach to assess situation and direct proper conditioning and training!
