    punch past target?

I had one trainer that recommended I withdraw right away upon impact and another trainer recommend that I punch 1-heads length through the target. I can see benefits in both I guess (guy tries to go back, gets hit anyways, knocking guy off balance and going a bit deeper in the gut) but also see some downsides more specifically for punching past (more vulnerable to counters).

I like my power punches, I always keep control of the center and I always mount the pressure with activity and staying in range.

Could someone help me out in choosing what to do? Could use a broader list of pros and cons, mine is pretty limited.

Hey bro, im somewhat new to boxing, but ive learned that its not always great to stick to one fighting style or skill. Both forms of punching are very important in my eyes. I think its just a matter of knowing which one to use in the right time, but both are def needed.

Aye and I am the type of guy that tries new things and adapts to new situations but both trainers described each style as the "only good way to box". Pretty much anyways. For now I'd just appreciate getting more information on both methods. Saying something like "the other trainer I had said this style of punching ******" is kinda.. yeah. Figured it might be an interesting topic to put up on here anyways. Please just talk/debate about the two methods o' punching and not the trainers.

both ways work but when your aiming for a spot 1 head behind their head your punches wont have fully extended. like the moment of impact is the only time your really doing damage to some ones head, as after the moment the head is now traveling at about the speed of the punch and can either naturaly stop or keep going because your pushing through it so if you arm dosnt fully extend your just hitting them with a softer blow and instead of hitting your just pushing them after the moment of impact.

but both ways work though like foreman or briggs would aim through people and hit them and knock them down. you wont get many actual ko's but youll get alot of tko's this way.

            what?

Though i admit your reasoning is quite good... its wrong.

really the only punch george could hit at its apex against quality opposition was the jab, and that seems to stop sometime after the chuvalo fight which results in him only sending 28 of his 68 kos down for the 10.

then theres briggs who only swarmed and pushed people down, i dont think he ever quite grasped the concept of distance and only put 17 of his 45 kos down for the 10.

soooo aiming 1 head behind their head your not gonna ko alot of people but you sure will knock em down, not that you cant ko just that youd have to do it in a counter or after you get his head/body moving one way with a hook then just come at it the other way and stop the body/head (like how george ko's lyle)

First of all, I didn't offer any reasoning, I simply made a statement.

Secondly, I wasn't talking about Foreman or Briggs specifically, that was just you.

You punch through your target, not at it. No matter which punch you're throwing, you follow through. That's boxing 101, have you ever actually been to a boxing gym?

This is honestly one of the most ****** (boxing related) things I've ever read. What exactly are you trying to say? Following through with your punches will knock people down, but it won't KO them? Seriously, WTF? Go watch a Mike Tyson fight. In fact, just go and watch any good KO you can find on Youtube...

Stop posting this ****, this forum is supposed to be helpful.

I know its karate 101 and kick boxing and muay tiah and what they teach at a boxing mma gym where they really dont know s**t about boxing.

but in boxing a ko punch does all its damage at the moment of impact and if you just pushing through them the apex impact will be moments after the actual impact the the apex impact wont be as pwerful as it could be and the innital impact is not as powerful as it could be as the apex of the impact wont be occuring at the same time.

Yes ive been to an actual boxing gym and ive been to an mma boxing gym, I currently go to the actual boxing gym.

so im supposed to watch the fights of some one who had a worse actual ko to "ko" ratio then briggs?

This forum is supposed to be help full like as in posting reasons for why your opinion is the way it is...instead of making ****** comments that have nothing to back them up. you need to stop posting this s**t, or atleast start posting reasons for your opinions.

You're right, Tyson wasn't a KO puncher at all... what was I thinking?

Here's a nice KO for you, although I'm sure you'll come back and tell me that Julian Jackson wasn't a KO puncher either, right?
