running shoes are the way to go,a light weight shoe,i think running without a proper fitting shoe can cause damage to the sole of the foot over time and can cause ankle discomfort as well, good fitting shoes wearing sweat socks for added cushioning is i think the best road to take

If you want to try it out but don't want to spend alot on the fancy 5 finger shoes, and don't want to cut your barefeet on concrete or glass etc, try a pair of aqua socks like these

They let you run the same way as barefoot but they give some protection and aren't as expensive as 5 fingers.

that would not be the same as barefoot running, for the obvious reasons

Yes, people run in their wrestling/boxing shoes as a way of minimalist type running.

The only problem is the durability of wrestling/boxing shoes. They aren't meant for street surfaces.

That's why the Vibram Five Fingers are pretty high priced, they have the Vibram outsoles. Vibram has been known for decades to be a top constructor in outsoles for fire fighter boots, military boots, construction boots, etc.

Yes, the Bikila model is the first model made for running on the streets.

I do it all the time, and I'm an obese 221lbs (was 240lbs 2 months ago), 5'8 guy. NO knee issues.

Yeah, running barefoot is fine on concrete, but it will take alot of time and conditioning of the feet to do it. And technique, of course:
