Going back to boxing, need advice on fitness among other things (Alot of writing)

Ok so bit of background, im 18 years old and im a male. I did boxing about 2 years ago and didn't take it seriously. Just did it for a bit of fun for about a year (on and off) never had any fights, sparred a few times though. Have a good body, not 100% sure of weight or anything at the minute or body fat but will find out tomorow and let you know. Seriously doubt this is going to be a factor atm because in my opinion im in great shape. Not the fittest but you wouldn't be able to tell that by looking at me.

Ok so for the past 6 or so months ive gone seriously off the rails, heavy drinking, hard drugs, unhealthy foods everyday etc. My lifestyle just went completely downhill for a while. Stopped all this about 2 months ago, havent touched a drug in about 2 months. I still drink every weekend and i'm not going to lie when i say i don't intend to stop doing this. I just don't drink as heavily and don't get into awful states as much.

Right the time limit ive set myself: i intend to go back to this boxing gym after Christmas. Alot of you will probably say "Why not go back now" but i don't think im ready physically or mentally to go back yet. So i have around 2 months to get myself ready physically, as i get more physically ready i know the mentality to go back will come. I'll get in touch with the trainer over the winter holidays and explain everything to him and sort things out with him, that shoudn't be a problem.

So down to the crunch now. I need to start home training asap so i can see a difference in my fitness level and in my strengths and other things in the next 2 months. As i said im still going to be going out most or all weekends so weekend training will probably be off limits for me. Also i hate gyms (with the exception of my boxing gym) so im not going to attend one of those so it will all be home/road training that i do. Can anyone give me any advice, links etc to help me draw up a schedule of what i'm going to have to be doing over the next couple of months? I will really need alot of advice on this and really appreciate any help i'm given!! If you need any more information on me i'll be happy to give it to you.

Just start eating right, working out everyday.

What I would do is about 20 minutes of jump rope, some shadowboxing if you remember the technique, swimming, running, pushups, ab exercises, and pullups. I think if you do a good number/time of all of those exercises everyday, you should be ready for the gym.

Granted, a boxing workout is like no other, so this will only partially prepare you. Maybe give the trainer at your local boxing gym a buzz (the gym that you prepare on going to) and explain your situation to him. Perhaps he can suggest some exercises you can do at home to prepare physically if that's what you're aiming to do.

You might begin to see in these two months that you don't enjoy the working out, in which case in might be a good thing as you won't be wasting your time, nor the coach's time, by taking up a sport that needs as much dedication and energy as does boxing.

    Good luck.

Ok thanks for that post. Over the passed 2 months ive really sorted out my eating anyway and have brought down my fast food meals to only 1 or 2 a week although i will still eat alot of fried bacon, sausages and eggs at home. This can, of course, be changed.

As ive done boxing training before i know what i'm in for and i do enjoy working out. But as you said, if after 2 months ive already started to dislike it i'll know that im not cut out for the sport.

I had never really perfected a technique so i don't want to shadowbox to often and just get worse and worse and go back to the gym with some realy bad habits. Would it be of any use however to maybe a few times a week doing a few rounds of shadow boxing with 16oz gloves on? Maybe this could increase hand speed, make punches stronger etc. Also, i'll have a look at ab exercises on the internet cause i don't think i've ever done these before. Unless i know them as something different. Can you reccomend any specific ab excercises that would be particularly helpful for boxing?

As far as ab exercises are concerned, I would do a lot of situps, crunches, 6 inches (hold both of your feet out in front of you while you're lying on the ground, 6 inches off the ground), leg raises (lying on your back, lift your feet off the floor to where they become perpendicular to the ground, and slowly bring them down, not touching the floor), twisting situps, v-ups (like a sit-up, but you start lying down on your back, and when you go up, you bring both your upper body and legs, so that you touch your toes with your fingers...harder than a regular situp), rowers (sitting on your ass, feet out in front of you, lift your legs about 6 inches off the ground and perform a rowing motion, bring your knees to your chest and out, in and out), inclined situps, scissors kicks, and bicycle. There are plenty of ab exercises you can find that are boxing-related on the web. Just search the forums around here and you'll find plenty. These are basically the ab exercises that I do, and they've helped me thus far.

Thanks, thats alot for me to work on and i'll have a look around the forum aswell. Will be starting doing all this from tomorow. Will probably draw up a sketchy schedule in the morning, just something to lookover with different excercises, foods etc on it. I'll put it up along with my Body Weight, fat and whatever else i can figure out. I have scales which you stand on and work all this out for you, there probably not exactly precise but it will definitly give me a rough idea of where i am. Well i probably won't understand much of it bout im sure someone else will and will be able to decipher for me
