Well I have been training for a little over a year and Before I started up I knew what could happen from training. I have a fear of having a fighters nose and brain damage. Everytime this is brought up, I immediatly get responses back like "if you dont want that happening then quit". I Don't want to quit but for some reason the fear of both of those things never left me. I was sparring the other day and I was outworking my sparring partner the first 2 rounds, the 3rd round he came out throwing bombs and I got caught with a couple of rights directly to my nose. I have been hit hard lots of times but, for some reason for the rest of the round I lost hope and just barly punched back. My nose started gushing out blood and I felt embarassed in front of the whole gym. I came home with the war stains and my mom flipped out. The kid I was sparring was 6"1 and im about 5"8. My nose is not broken but it seems just a little bit swollen. I am shocked and really disapointed in myself about letting this happen to me. Any comments on this weird fear or anything you guys would like to throw out there go ahead.Anyway what are some side effects some of you guys have noticed since starting up?

bloody nose has really doesn't mean much.
i had times where i had a trickle of blood and didn't notice until that hours after i had a bit of dried blod on my shirt. i was thinking to my self, how the **** could i not have blood on my face, notice it, or anything? must've not bled much.
the only problem with getting tapped in the nose is that it can make a person's eyes water and that can leave a person without clear vision for a second or two.
your nose gets used to it. well, most noses i suppose. not sure if all people's nose adapts as smoothly.
blood is something to be proud of once in a while.
brain cells, they go all the time. every time you sneeze you lose brain cells. as long as you aren't going to be fighting 80 fights in a pro environment, you likely have no need to worry.
if you ever feel there is a problem, see your doc.
hey, next time hit him right in the beak for me. a hard, straight sharp right. or, power jab man!

The flat boxer's nose is a result of repeated breaks.
I have been training and sparring for the last two years in an inner-city gym that caters to gangsta-thugs and extreme athletes. I have seen concussions, "KO's on their feet," busted ribs, and sprained and broken wrists, fingers, and hands. I have seen guys dropped to one knee more times than I can count and I've even seen guys laid out flat in sparring. I've seen hundreds of bloody noses and had dozens, myself.
BUT. . . .
I have yet to see a broken nose from sparring with sparring headgear and 16-oz. gloves. Not one. I'm not saying it doesn't happen; just that a broken nose is far more likely under competition circumstances -- 10 or 12 oz. gloves and open-faced headgear. I've seen some bad bleeders and one that had a trainer swearing that it was broken but it turned out not to be.
Don't sweat it. It's a perfectly normal fear but it has little basis in reality -- like most fears.
I come home with a black eye and/or a bloody nose and my wife just sighs and says, "It's like being married to a 7-year-old, I swear." She gets me an ice pack and I have a Scotch. It's what we do. Swimmers get wet, skaters fall down, boxers get punched in the face. It's an extreme sport.Last edited by fraidycat; 04-20-2008, 10:44 PM.

Yeah mate don't worry too much about brain damage, if you drink your probably more likely to get damage from that than boxing. Except your cardiovascular system is getting a workout so your getting healthier.
On the otherhand don't spar at all if you have a headache from sparring the previous night, as there is such a thing as second impact syndrome which amplifies concussions severely and can have bad impacts.
Just more confidence in your defence mate and you will be fine, nothing to be ashamed of from a bloody nose, just means you have to something to work on more!

Second Impact Syndrome can KILL you.
The two things you should never **** around with in this sport are headaches and hand pain. Never train with either.
