    wrists

    hey everyone. just recently bought a 150lb heavy bag and started practicing on it this week. I have no boxing experience, but I"m doing it as a way to stay in shape and just have fun.
    I notice when I hit it, alot of times my wrists hurt when I hit the bag too hard. I dont know if this is normal, or if maybe I'm punching it wrong? Any tips would be helpful, thanks!

    First off if you're new to boxing why are you buying a 150lb bag? Anyway,my wrist used to hurt on it also.I just broke my wrist in.Although once I hurt it real bad and I had to lay off 2 months,but when I got back it was all balanced out. You gotta take it easy at first,but 150lb is a no no for a beginner.

      really? why is it so bad? i figure if I'm going to work my way up to it anyway, why waste money, buying lighter bags, then buying a littler heavier, then a little heavier, etc. I'll be spending so much more money. This way, it might be a little harder, but I'll get stronger faster than If I started off with lighter ones. Anyway, just wanted to know if it was normal for the wrists to hurt, because if I was punching it wrong, I needed to correct that fast.

        You could be looping your hooks,or not tighting up your fist when you throw 1-2s. Also if you wanted it to stay in shape only.A smaller one would better fit you because you can move around the move alot more easier since when you hit the bag it will fly around,and you can follow it as it does. Good for the legs.

          yeah, I did want it stay in shape. But I've read that heavier punching bags develop more punching power. I figure I could stay in shape, AND get stronger at the same time. So far while practicing on it, I've been moving around alot and working up a good sweat. But then, maybe I'm just out of shape.

            Yeah as long as you're working around it,it should be good. Just got hit the bag hard repeatedly like it stole something.A sure way to mess your wrist up. You gotta know how to throw properly first.

              If you don't do it already, it probably wouldn't hurt you to wrap your hands which also require that you get a frim wrap around the wrists too. This should help limit some of the give in your wrist. I agree with the above posters though....learn how to throw punches correctly to avoid unneccessary risk to your wrists.
