So I watched a UFC fight for the very first time.... Absolutely horrendous

As the years go on I watch more of UFC, I probably watched half a dozen of their cards this year. The quality of fighters continues to grow also, it’s a way higher standard compared to when I started off watching it in 2009.

It’s definitely more gruesome and barbaric than boxing but there are still rules and things that are prohibited.... like strikes on the back of the head or kneeing a downed opponent. It’s more fighting than boxing is though.

Similar thoughts. I love the competitiveness in the UFC too. I've become more of a fan since grappling has become less of a thing. Still 2nd to boxing & likely always will be but I appreciate all forms of fighting & MMA has more elements of a real fight than boxing does.

The fighters are becoming more technically sound and it's starting to grab my attention just a little bit now. I remember I tried to get into it like 10 years ago and I just couldn't stand the piss poor technique, the monotonity of the fights and the white trash attitude of the fighters and the fans that just totally repelled me.

Now there's a lot more competitive fights going some rounds and more strategic thinking in there, better technique all around, they also rely on punching a lot more now and some of the guys aren't bad at that at all, the fighters seem to be more classy and the fans seem to have calmed down a bit.

I never saw it as a threat or enemy to boxing and alwats thought since these are 2 different sports that they can coexist without too many problems.

Exactly, it’s extremely competitive and is run how we all dream boxing should be, Spence v Bud or AJ v Wilder would have happened automatically..
The talent pool is getting bigger each year and the standard is rising, the undercards kill most the boxing cards for quality

It's definitely a great thing but I think about the sustainability of that model. Are the fighters always going to be willing to take on the hardest fights for the relatively low pay? Shouldn't they actually delay the big fights just a tad bit so that enough drama and interest is created which would help ppv sales? These are relevant points for prize fighting in general and they shouldn't be ignored.

No they shouldn’t, that’s why it’s a competitive sport and not WWE. Boxing as it is in the pros isn’t a true sport, name another sport where you can pick and choose who you compete against?

The money in UFC will grow as the sport grows.

I would add it kills the bogey man tag, there’s no avoiding anyone..
There’s been some great ‘awkward’ fighters missed out through the years for obvious reasons.
Or the situation where fighters in the top 10 refuse to fight each other once they get the ranking, it’s pathetic

They are still fighting for legitimacy everyday and their hearts sink every time something threatens the legitimacy of their sport.



Thats the former featherweight champion days after he was robbed. The bad decision came just before this origin story was told and I find that verrrry interesting. A preemptive strike made by Dana to sweep an embarrassing fact under the rug. The fact that anyone can become champion when your skills are spread so thin. You see them walk into nothing jabs and get knocked out or get flying kneed by some newb.

I figure in about 30 years when the UFC gets all the bugs out of their system then they will look back at all the cross training and laugh. Like someone said earlier in this thread, they are jacks of all trades but masters of none. IMO two or three fighting styles where they can execute everything perfectly and smoothly is the future. Wake me up when that happens.

I’m coming over as a UFC fan boy here, which I’m not...but

When we have a heavyweight champ who can’t box, looses every single round until he lands a big one, we are in no position to say anything.

As far a the jack of all trades, they have to be able to wrestle/bjj, have to be able to box and to have some sort of kicking based skill. That’s it, you could even narrow it down to boxing and wrestling and still be a champ
