I believe this was the original plan, and the reason for robbing GGG and Kovalev. They used the foreign stars to try to set up the big American vs Mexican cash grab, but I think Ward hurt his knee midway through the Kovalev rematch, and that messed up their plans. Also explained why he got so desperate and started fouling Kovalev. He wasn't sure he could go late in that fight.
Canelo and Ward are good fighters, but neither have any performances vs top 10 guys their size as spectacular as even the top 5 best performances vs top 10 guys of Kovalev and GGG in their primes. They were not quite that good to just look spectacular and dominate 3 guys like that every year to become superstars by themselves, especially Ward, so the boxing establishment needed two patsies who they could use to vault Ward and Canelo to superstardom. When I say superstars, I mean like Floyd or Pacquiao. Canelo was already a big star, but they needed the patsie to take him to that hundred-million-dollar-fights level.
With Kovalev-Ward, Kovalev's drinking problem at that point in time was well known, it showed badly in his performance vs Chilemba before Ward, so they knew it was a good bet.
With GGG-Canelo, they knew from the Brook and Jacobs fights that he was declining and ripe for the picking. Remember they don't need to patsy to be so ripe that you win 12-0, they just need it to be competitive enough to give the "W" to the guy they want to get it. Which they did.
Now Kovalev has cleaned up his lifestyle and hired a good conditioning coach, and he looks a threat again, so the way they're going to engineer the win for the house fighter this time is to force him to take the fight only 9 weeks after the biggest war of his career vs Yarde, the biggest puncher who hit Kovalev with the most punches of his entire career, where Kovalev was almost knocked out.
They want Canelo vs a damaged version of Kovalev, then they're going to make the "Kovalev was spectacular, but these two guys, Canelo and Ward, were better, so you have to watch this fight!" superbowl of big fights, and casual fans will fall for it because they won't know the details about what really happened in, and around, the Ward fights, or how long it takes to heal from an 11 round war at 36 years old, etc. They will just see, and believe the media telling them, that Ward and Canelo both beat Kovalev, and they will fall for it completely.
I just want to give yall a head's up of what I think the plan is. We'll see what goes down. Maybe spread the word ahead of time so at least hardcore fans are woke to the bull**** even if casual fans won't be.
