I think this would be a good fight to take for Usyk. Lebedev only lost his #1 spot from a debatable decision to Gassiev. Beating him would further elevate Usyk's cruiserweight legacy and leave a higher watermark for future cruisers to aim at

I guess Lebedev is pretty much the last guy he can face to improve his CW standing and he would have comprehensively cleaned out the division if he does it.
However, im a big believer in Usyk, and I love HW boxing, so personally I want to see him start his HW journey sooner rather than later with a fight vs a top 10 guy. Becoming the GOAT cruiserweight would be a hell of an achievement but having success at HW puts his career into a whole different stratosphere.

Freddie Roach Very Confident of Lebedev Defeating Gassiev
November 29, 2016:
Lebedev vs. Gassiev creates a classic duel between trainers. Lebedev is handled by Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach, and Gassiev is trained by Abel Sanchez, who is currently best known as the head coach for middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.
Roach respects the work of Sanchez, but he doesn't believe that it will be enough to win.
"Gassiev has a very good trainer and we expect a tough fight. Lebedev is ready. The training camp took place at the right time, and I am confident that we will leave the ring with these two belts. I definitely think we'll win. I would not go into a fight where I wasn't sure if my guy could win," Roach said.

Denis Lebedev and Murat Gassiev put on the war everyone expected in Moscow’s Khodynka Ice Palace, battling it out over twelve grueling rounds. In the end, Gassiev’s power and body work overcame Lebedev’s combination punching for a split decision victory.
Gassiev (24-0, 17 KO) started slowly, allowing Lebedev (29-3, 22 KO) to rack up the early rounds with volumes, but began stalking in the fourth and put Lebedev down hard one round later with a vicious liver punch. It was trench warfare from then on, Gassiev’s brutal power shots against Lebedev’s movement and volume.
The fight really could have gone either way; Gassiev’s punches clearly had the greater impact, busting up Lebedev’s eyes and forcing him to reset, but Lebedev slipped some heavy punches through and seemed to rattle Gassiev with a straight left. The judges ultimately sided with "Iron," giving him the split decision on scores of 113-114, 116-112, and 116-111.

Still don't think it's a particularly necessary or important fight for Usyk to take but it would kinda tie up a loose end at Cruiser if there's no good fight to make at Heavy for the first quarter of 2019.Last edited by Citizen Koba; 12-10-2018, 09:06 AM.

If he beats Ledbedev, Usyk will have defeated the top 5 men in his weight class on the way to unifying all the belts. That is really impressive and I don't remember the last time we saw that.
