Comments Thread For: Sugar Ray Leonard Says Joshua Must Be Global, Fight in America

Former five division world champion and Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard believes Anthony Joshua must go global by fighting in the United States. Joshua, who holds the WBO, WBA, IBF, IBO heavyweight titles, has exclusively fought in the UK - where he brings in massive crowds, like 90,000 to his April 2017 TKO win over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in London.

SRL is right. If one is going to call themselves the heavyweight champion of the world then one must fight globally, on every corner of globe and in every continent; Especially in the United States.

When Muhammad Ali was champion or just simply a prize fighter he fought everywhere. In Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, the Caribbean; The whole world over. Which was one reason why, he was the most recognizable human on the planet.

Especially among the developing countries of the world.

Do Americans fight globally when they've made it to the top? Did Mayweather?

Fighters are going to fight where they make the most money. That's the UK for Joshua. Fans have an old mindset for when the US was the home of HW boxing, that time has gone. UK is the new home of HW boxing. There's a big HW fight happening in the US in December and they've sold 7k tickets in over a month. HW boxing is dead in the US. US boxing needs Joshua, Joshua doesn't need the US.

            Strongly Disagree

the Klitschkos didnt need america and neither does joshua

now joshua COULD fight there but i wouldnt advise it against wilder or fights where judges and referee might come into play

He should fight in America that's sensible but also boxing in the States was in a very different place when SRL was about. Brits used to go to the States to gate crash a party now were really talking about him going to the States to start a party unless Joshua can fight Canelo.
Miller or Wilder rematch in the States both look obvious choices.

One problem is he has a lot of belts and his current most probable mandatory s are Whyte (WBO) and Pulev (IBF). Usyk could get in there but his manager seems to suggest he sensibly wants some in between fights. Do any of those fights sell in the US probably not / and he has zero scope for voluntary.

Its a shame the Klitschko rematch in Vegas never came off and Wilder looks like he has zero interest in ant immediate unification.

I think AJ has maxed his potential in the UK market so logically the next step is international. America probably still has the biggest boxing community/market overall so they should be the easiest to convert into AJ fans if he does and says the right stuff and fights the right people.

Going to America does make sense but I'm happy with AJ staying put so we get to watch his fights our local time.

Still no mention of Joshua even entertaining the thought of fighting Ortiz. Until he does, and lets forget about him fighting Wilder for now, he isn't testing himself against the best. Pulev and Whyte? Please...No one wants to see those fights.

Whyte clearly ducked Ortiz, and has anyone noticed other top ten guys even entertain the thought of fighting Ortiz? Breazeale, Parker, Chisora, Povetkin, Miller, Usyk, Fury, or any of the younger up and coming guys?
