You must be watching another fight if you didn't see how and why Penalosa won. Sure Roxas threw a lot of punches but Penalosa has more hits. Just compare the face of the two protagonist and you'll see the difference.

Did you watch closely how Roxas and his team reacted? They knew they've lost it because it's far from being close.

No use crying over spilled beans. I thought jaca was about to go down when the fight was stopped. He was clinching and I didn't the head butt when the fight was stopped but I think he was ahead on points. That guy who fought gerry is a tough hombre. Very tough but I think it was gerry who won the fight. Amonsot also was the clear winner and the fight between manny and oscar was a classic.

I was a Jaca observer for the past year or so, but watching him in his last two fights had my interest wane a touch.

In another thread, I said I think Penalosa won a close one but his best fights are all behind him now. His performance vs. Rojas brought to me vivid flashbacks of his twin title losses to In Joo Choo and his last attempt to wrest the title from Masamori Tokoyama. In those fights, as in the Rojas duel, Penalosa looked like he was thinking he has a big punch-- an erroneous assumption given that Rojas once gave Rosendo Alvarez such a beating that Alvarez finished the fight with a closed left eye and a bloody nose (Alvarez went down in the second too), although a unanimous decision was awarded to Alvarez. Rojas is a guy who does not shy away from the trenches and will always dish out as much as he takes. In his losing meeting with the then undefeated Maldonado, the decision was split and in his last fight prior to the Penalosa fight, he floored Jose Nieves twice.

One does not deal with a Rojas in the manner that Penalosa did, and hope to go away winning decisively enough to have people rave about his return to world championship level. In the fight, Penalosa looked too economical and too selective with his offense, choosing instead to showcase his defensive skills. He did just a tad better offense against Rojas than he did against Tokoyama and Choo. And a tad better cannot cut it if one hopes to enlarge ones audience. Winning a close one (in the eyes of many, including me) against Rojas cannot advance his plans.

As for the young Lightweight from Cebu, Amonsot, I know he was knocking out opponents in the lower weights but I think he should buy some power as Lightweight. He was, in a fashion, dominant, but then, who was he fighting? If he wants to remain at Lightweight, he should do some more fighting against better opposition at that weight to see if he can hack it there. He was a late sub for Suico, so, I give him some slack for appearing winded in the late rounds, thus, failing to finish an already exhausted foe. He also climbed the ring with what appeared to be a kind of lump under one eye.

I think, Philippine boxing's future does not go too far beyond Bautista and Gorres--yet. Add, perhaps a better managed and handled Rodel Mayol to that list. What I have seen of Gabi, so far, I cannot enthuse about.

Hey, that's not really bleak, is it? Pacquiao and Villoria to be joined by Boom Boom and Z; perhaps, Rodel too?

Now that you pointed it out, I agree that gerry were sometimes tentative in his attacks. I don't think he is big enough to become a champ at 118. Rafa will give him a very tough time. As a replacement to suico, czar did a good job in beating ortiz but that performance won't be enough to beat the likes of chico. I still want to see boom boom fight in the undercard but it just did not happen. Hope he would do good again in his next fight. Hey buddy, what do you think about suico's chances against diaz?

Suico won't look far to find Juan. Juan shall be right there in front of him. BUt Randy is slower. Diaz can put in combos (feather ones as they may be) before Suico can react.

Randy has the puncher's edge (not just a chance). I wonder if Juan can take it. If Juan can, he can mess up Randy's mind. The Filipino appears to get easily frustrated when his power doesn't do the job.

T'will be quite something to watch, pal.

I think randy's oly chance is to land a big lucky punch. I know he has power but as what we saw against jaruegui he is to slow footedto win against diaz. If a shot fighter like jaruegui can outbox him, what more with juan? I would be glad to proven wrong though.

I'm sure you'll be glad to be proven wrong buddy. Just to notch up another world title for good ole Pilipinas.

What's eating crow in exchange for added national pride and fame, eh, pal?
