Comments Thread For: Hurd Surprised Lara Went Toe-to-Toe, Thought He'd Run All Fight

Jarrett Hurd was surprised Erislandy Lara didn't move more Saturday night. Hurd figured he'd have a tougher time tracking down the typically elusive Lara in what developed into a extremely competitive, compelling 154-pound title unification fight in Las Vegas. The smaller, left-handed Lara known as one boxing's best technicians often stood and traded with the bigger, stronger Hurd, who won a 12-round split decision to remain undefeated.

This is why I never knocked Lara for his safety first approach. Wars like this can shave years off your boxing career. It was razor close on the cards but Lara took a vicious beating. Hurd's punches were more impactful. And I think it was strategy to engage Hurd like that because that's how he started round one. It's not like he went toe to toe midfight. He felt like if he tried sticking and moving he would just tire faster. The gameplan almost worked because it got him a draw.. Then he got dropped.

Exactly! That's why a 34 years old Lara can still deliver this type of performance vs a prime 27 years pressure fighter. If Hurd continues to fight like that, I doubt the 34 years old version of Hurd could go 12 rounds against the 27 years old version of himself...or worse, the 27 years old version of Lara.

I agree with you. There's also a point to be made old legs here. Lara hasn't been the same for a while and his recent opponent selection tells that story clearly.

Yup, a part of it might have been Lara finally trying to silence the naysayers about his "boring" style. Made for great TV though Lara lost a razor thin decision and took a beating in the process as you stated. A beating and losing his belt at 35 might have cost him a few years off his career physically and financially.

Hurd might fight Charlo in his next fight. Hopefully this guy can even talk correctly by 30.

Do your research fellas, Hurd doesn't fight like that!!!! His last 3 fights he had to chase his opponents down!! Hurd is a slick counter punching fighter and will catch alot of people by surprise because he makes adjustments going into his fights, he prepares for the damage he knows he will Endure with that style, he is not going to fight Charlo like that... Trout / Lara use their legs, you prepare to put that pressure on and carry the fight... Lara had to fight that way or he would have been overwhelmed like Trout was...Boxing is a very dangerous sport and these cats deserve alot of credit - Hurd was on Lara so bad last night... Has anyone ever seen Lara's face like that? Hurd is a serious problem because he fight slick which is his style or if he needs to put that pressure on he can break you...

Lara's older and has the reputation of being incredibly boring at times so 'maybe' Lara figured that this young dude should taste some skillful extra leather to make him think twice about coming forward all night...... but I think Hurd is pretty much spot on with how he assessed the fight.

Hurd could use the Frank Galarza style on Charlo
