The Ring ****zine has awarded world championships in professional boxing within each weight class from its foundation in 1922 until the 1990s, and again since 2001. These titles were at one point intertwined with the lineal championship of a weight class, but have since become distinct from each other.
"Lineal" is not mentioned anywhere to describe Ring's championships. The rules of lineal are clear and Ring's rules have nothing to do with lineal. Their championship policy does not claim to be lineal.
Matt (Naperville, IL): Could not be more disappointed in the latest changes to The Ring championship policy
Dan Rafael (12:13 PM): I agree wholeheartedly. Now it is just another title with no meaning and no juice to make a fight happen. The current editors mangled the original concept -- it's SUPPOSED to be hard to fill the vacancies. Now if guys ranked in the top 5 can do it wonderful. It's supposed to signify the lineal championship and now it won't. So I'm done with it.
