Carl Frampton became the first Irishman since Steve Collins to win world titles in two weight classes when he defeated Leo Santa Cruz. The WBA world featherweight champion from Northern Ireland still doesn't think he has done enough to stake his claim as the best boxer from Ireland in the sport's history. If the undefeated Frampton, 29, can overcome Santa Cruz again in their rematch Saturday night in Las Vegas (Showtime) and eventually add a 130-pound world title to his resume, maybe then he'll feel comfortable enough accepting that subjective compliment.

The first ever Irish man to win a world title in Ireland, and it was during the civil war, a bomb went off outside the building that day, and all sides agreed to cease fire until the fight was over, bringing the nation together if only for a short time for 20rounds of boxing....

The only reason he got the title shot in the first place was over the racism in England and the USA at the time and some political issues... he beat battling siki to become world champion.

Will be hard to beat something like that no matter what happens in Irish boxing.
But on the right track Frampton...

In a way he has a point, he just didn't really say it very well or in the correct way......

All of the boxers mentioned above faught under the Irish flag,
Now you have the likes of Tyson fury who were born in England but fought for Ireland as amateurs,and boxed for England when they turned pro....

Then their is the north, which in a way is complicated especially to outsiders.. a lot of boxers from the north choose to fight for the UK only because of the money and the British title and that kind of stuff.....
Don't think that Barry mcguigan is a hugely popular man in boxing circles in Ireland, he claimed to be Irish before he gave up his Irish passport for a British one to fight for the British title. A lot of Irish people (at that time) had some very ill feelings over that, and was actually pointed out by Tyson fury......

Now I understand what Frampton is trying to do, and I've supported Frampton since his amateur days, but he his only kind of pulling the Irish thing to get fans on his side, now I like Frampton,but any boxer claiming to be fighting for Ireland, while standing for god save the queen is a spit in the face for some people....
Example, james mcclean (Irish footballer from the north) choose to play for the republic....turns his back on god save the queen and refuses to wear a poppy..hated in England but has the best following from Irish football fans...
Frampton thinks he can play both sides but he can't claim to fight for Ireland or be the best boxer in Ireland while fighting under a British banner... Now I understand he's trying to bring communities together up north, but wait and see Conlan..watch the Irish fans 100% back him to the hilt, cause he fought for Ireland as an amateur and will carry the tri colour for Ireland..........the difference will become clear once conlan has a few fights under his belt

If he KO's leo and then beat's selby and Gary russell, he definitely enters the debate as the greatest alongside Steve Collin's IMO.

What's Carl's stance on the UK? Is he for a united Ireland or? I suppose that wouldnt be a popular Pov?
