Comments Thread For: Weights From London: Golovkin 159, Brook 159.4

Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook easily made weight ahead of their middleweight title fight, which takes place Saturday evening in front of a sold-out crowd at O2 Arena in London, England.

As has been the case for most of his six-year reign, Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) came in at a fit and trim 159 pounds. In stark contrast, Brook - a reigning welterweight titlist who makes his middleweight debut - tipped the scales at a muscular 159.4 pounds.

Bulking Up For Golovkin Could be Disastrous for Kell Brook
      by Frank Lotierzo

      September 8, 2016:

You would think when you compile their records which collectively add up to 71-0 (57), you’d have the making of the ultimate slugfest between middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin 35-0 (32) and welter weight title holder Kell Brook 36-0 (25). And that very well could be how it turns out. However for Brook to give himself his best chance to win, he would be best served fighting as a boxer-puncher more so than an attacker and seeking the spectacular knockout.

Today everyone looks at Golovkin as if he’s impervious to pain and perhaps unbeatable. But the fact of the matter is, as terrific as GGG has been, he’s been swimming in a shallow pool of upper-tier middleweights. Nobody is giving Brook a chance, but he’s a much better opponent than anyone Golovkin has faced so far…But here’s where the problems show up. Even though he’s a big welterweight, he’s going to get out-muscled by Golovkin. Rather than doing the sensible thing, and opting for a hit-and-run strategy, he’s bulked way, way, up.

He now looks like a body builder-absolutely the dumbest strategy he could have taken. By packing on useless weight, he has taken away all of his natural advantages. He should have come in at 154-156, and moved all night (or for as long as possible). It looks like he’s decided to try to get Golovkin’s respect by standing his ground. If that’s what he does, he’s dead.

California to England is a long ride and can be a problem when your making weight! I know GGG makes 160 easily however when you add in the air time and the time to acclimate once you land those "late rounds" can come quickly and be painful.
If Brook could take GGG into deep waters and still be strong there could be a n
interesting time and merry ol' England.

If GGG is putting on a non interest look to lure Brook into exchanges early he's a better actor than Haye!!!!

Interesting match up, will GGG age in front of us and will Brook show a big heart?

By that logic all tim bradley and james kirland's opponents were shook as well. Brook looks like he wants the cover of a fitness mag. Muscles dont equate to boxing skill or power.

I guessing he's gonna try and tie ggg up on the inside hense why he's bulked up

If he can get his punches off first and tie him up he could just mug him over the distance

Big ask though and I'm a bit worried if the added weight will mess with his cardio

Should be a good fight can't wait now

Brook is probably at his fighting weight. He won't put on too much by tomorrow.
