If Ward fights his fight this will be a boring as hell UD for him. Its up to Kovalev to force him out of his comfort zone. Or a competent ref who will do his job. I have zero expectations for an exciting fight, but am hoping for a thrilling ending.

Kovalev has the HBO machine behind him. Ward is linked to the Golden State Warriors and Steph Curry which can boost his popularity.

I think it can be done. Plus the winner will hopefully fight chickenson at some point which will be a huge event in Canada.

A disadvantage of many of these EE power punchers/pressure fighters that while they are usually more precise and more polished and have a better ability to cut down the ring than their Mexican and Argentinian counterparts they are also more mechanical and predictable at the same time and they often refuse to fight from any other distance than their preferred one (which is usually in the pocket, mid distance) and they usually need to set their feet to throw their combinations. They are not the phone booth style brawlers who feel comfortable in the middle of the ring, close to the opponent, while trading shots with each other. They only feel comfortable when the opponent backs down, so they can corner him or just press him to the ropes where they can tee off on him with a barrage of power punches and finish him off.
However they are uncomfortable and their work rate drops if they can't set their feet.

Beating them depends on 4 thing mainly imo...

1. Good lateral movement: Not moving in straight lines but moving laterally so the fight can stay on the middle of the ring and they can' set their feet
2. Dominating their jab to further prevent them from throwing. An Argentinian or Mexican type of fighter would just lunge i with power punches in a situation like this, however EE fighters are usually too cautious and well schooled for that, they know that then they are more open to counters so they usually don't attack without measuring with the jab first.
3. Keep the fight in a distance which is uncomfortable to them, this needs very good timing and speed against such a good fighter as KOvalev but Ward is even better imo and he is the master of playing with distances. Fight on the outside probably favors Ward, fighting on the inside also favors him, the pocket, mid distance fighting is where they are both very good, so that's the place which Ward should rather avoid.
4. Force situations which are not really taught in boxing schools like inside fighting for example. EE fighters and any other fighters who spent much time among the amateurs usually (not always but usually) have a hard time to react tactics and situations which weren't taught to them among amateurs. They fight main by innervation. They do everything by the book but that also means that if they meet with a new situation to they don't have a pre-taught answer they freeze and can't adapt to it.


See examples for the last like Crawford vs Postol, Magomedov vs Hernandez, Dimitrenko vs Manyuchi, Shafikov vs Miguel Vazquez or Klitscko vs Fury. Not all of them the same style but the same approach to the sport and the same mentality. It has it's advantages but also disadvantages.

I agree about the robotic nature of east euro fighters but let's be honest, it's not as if Ward is the most dynamic fighter on he planet. He pretty much always does the same thing but I reckon he is better at what he does than Kovalev is at what HE does...and again, that strength that Ward has on the inside is going to be telling.

Ward wins an ugly fight which fans will complain about.
