Everyone has a gameplan until he gets hit. Excuse me if my quote is not exact. Ward can do whatever against Kovalev. But Kovalev is a smart and fast boxer, too. So, sooner or later Kovalev will test Ward's chin and that will be the end.

It disappoints me when a fighter chooses to boil himself down to a lower weight class because he's afraid of fighting at higher weight.

... just wait and see how the "puncher" boxes from his back foot and the "slick" one eventually has to "jump in"... Just wait and see...

That won't be an issue. Ward has no problem getting stuck in there, he did it to Carl Froch for the whole 36 minutes. Also, trying to outsmart a natural boxer at his own game can have terrible consequences, how many times have opponents tried that against Mayweather? How many times has it worked?

Their styles may not be exactly the same, but Floyd and Ward are from the same school of boxing, you simply do not outbox them.

The takeaways from their recent fights: Ward can switch stances, great jab, and great defense, BUT has not been in with a puncher @ 175. Kovalev has great power in the left hook upstairs and down stairs, and the straight right is "night-night," BUT poor defense against the jab, and can be smothered in the clinch. Whoever gets the distance they want will win! 50/50 fight!

This will be a chess match. Ward will be prepared to avoid the straight right hand. Either by circling right or slipping it and countering to the body. Kovalev will look to get the left hook going to set up the right hand. I see it a lot like the Froch fight with Ward jumping in off the jab..smothering, scoring to the body, then getting out and resetting.

... funny to see alts discussing "styles"... and also bringing Floyd into this one...

Ward is not Mayweather. They are not alike in style or build at all.

Floyd has a freakisly long reach for his size and lightening fast reflexes. Floyd's reach is actually longer than Ward's and only half an inch shorter than Kovalev's!

People seem to have forgotten how Kovalev boxed patiently, from a distance, behind his long jab, for 11 rounds against BHop and only started going forward to close the show in round 12.

Kovalev can do the same thing with Ward, and he will be waiting for Ward to do his usual thing of jumping in with a flurry of punches then holding, mauling and head ****ing close up.

Sooner later Kovalev will either catch Ward jumping in or nail him with one of his favourite long range combos - hard jab to the body followed by a big long right hand over the top.
