Comments Thread For: Pro Boxers Can Compete in Olympics: Rule Change Approved

Professional boxers can compete at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, if they qualify. An overwhelming vote by the sport's amateur governing body, known as AIBA, on Wednesday allows any boxer to try to qualify next month and earn selection for their national team. But AIBA's plan has been criticized across the professional ranks as a move toward dangerous mismatches between established boxers and inexperienced amateurs.

This is ridiculous. I will be surprised if someone doesn't get seriously hurt.

It also severely limits the opportunities for the lower level guys to make a name for themselves before turning pro.

I agree with you 100%, and they're taking away head gear. Someone is getting hurt.

First step of the dream having all the best fighters from every country fighting at the Olympics. Olympics is the biggest sports stage, the best fighters should be competing. Amateurs still have the world championships etc.

I hope the major sanctioning bodies ban any pro boxer that competes under this disgraceful organisation, AIBA.

I'm in agreement that pro boxing doesn't belong in the Olympics, but as for head guards they never fit correctly & do more halm then good, so good ridence!

Watch some high profile boxer get **** on by an olympian and all of these guys: "I knew that would happen all along! Exposed!"

IMO the biggest danger about mixing pro boxing and olympic boxing isn't that the pros will hurt the olympians.

It's shady fights where a high profile pro favorite wins in "peculiar fashion" over an amateur. The protection big stars rely on nowadays will be a bit harder to arrange. Then again that also means probably none will even try.

A lot of being elite is the preparation and circumstances you're afforded, not just godlike skill.

Maybe the pro would be hurt, I mean people talk like in olympics only participate young kids or some bums like the guys who Wilder had to beat to pick the bronze and it is not true. For example, in welter there was a guy called Serik Sapiyev(he retired in 2012). I have serious doubts that in a 3 round match Mayweather or Pacquiao could beat him and I am sure they wouldn't hurt him. Rigondeux was amateur, Lomachenko was amateur, Golovkin was amateur.... and we have had figthing for titles guys like Molina or Leapai who would lost with all the top amateur heavyweights in an amateur match.

So that thought of people getting hurt is WBC, Oscar de la Hoya, bull****. I didn't see them worried about Khan health for example.
