Cowardly BS tactics like this are a huge reason why boxing's popularity isn't what it used to be. People want to see the best fight the best, and when the "top guy" vacates his belt to avoid facing the other "top guy" it just looks really bad.
It's fine if Canelo doesn't want to fight at 160. I get it. He knows he'll lose. He's making a decision with his best interests in mind. It's smart. It's just annoying as a fan to not get to see a big fight between two guys who are at the top of the division because there's no strong governing body that forces guys to face quality opponents. It makes me long for the days of Haggler and Hearns.
Yes show GGG who the A side is. Canelo never wanted to fight for the belt Cotto had. Cotto is the one who decided to put up the belt.. Also, GGG said that he would go under 160 for a business fight. So if anyone stops this fight it's GGG.
BINGO. Canelo about to expose the GGG camp that pretended this was about belts when it was always about making a big money fight. Now the that the belt is off the table no more excuses you either agree to fight Canelo at his weight like you said you would for Floyd/Manny or keep fighting bums like Wade. No belt is going to help GGG dictate terms against the bigger star which clearly is Canelo. GGG shot himself in the foot he had little leverage before and has zero now. Canelo had to agree to a catchweight to get Floyd to fight him, Cotto had to agree to one to get the Manny fight, Hopkins had to agree to one to get the Oscar fight. It's GGG's turn.
Canelo will be keeping the lineal belt hostage now. Shame. I can see Jacobs and Saunders now at their respective homes crying and wishing Canelo would man up.
