Comments Thread For: Amir Khan Admits Canelo's Size Initially Concerned Him

British star Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) pulled a rabbit out of his hat after making his shocking announcement last week.

Khan revealed that he was moving up in weight, by eight-pounds, to challenge WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) on May 7th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Dummy, Nelo gonna KO Khan within 6 rounds. If Cotto n Kirkland couldn't stop Canelo from coming foward I can't see Khan's power keeping him honest. Nelo just gonna walk him down like he did to Cotto, freakin Oscar better price the tickets within reason and not like the Cotto tix $700 bucks for a nose bleed seat.

The difference in size is significant and it can't be made up by training in the time he has.

      Canelo at weigh in 155
Khan's last fight at weigh in 147

      Weight difference = 8 pounds
This is after flushed out of water to make weight so we can assume this is lean muscle

There are real limits on how fast it is possible to build muscle.

"Hypertrophy of the muscle complex has, so far, been shown to be controlled by what is known as protein turnover (the breakdown of damaged muscle proteins and creation of new and stronger ones). This process takes time"

"In the muscles, protein turnover rate occurs approximately every 180 days (6 months). This lends even more support to the observation that the turnover rate limits the natural body (of the non drug-using athlete, bodybuilder) in building muscle quickly."

"Keep in mind that it's physiologically impossible to gain more than one pound of lean muscle per week. For most weight-gainers, half a pound per week would be an even more realistic goal, because they reach their genetic limit. Remember that gaining muscle is a long-term project and not something that can be simply turned on."

Bear in mind that for Khan his training cannot be focused entirely on gaining muscle. He has to work on his cardio and his technique as well. Building max muscle requires a lot of rest.

Hence I don't believe Khan can put on 7 pounds of lean muscle in the time. He may come in heavier than you think but that will be additional fat and water.
"Those who scoff at this and continue to believe they've gained super size over such a short period forget, as suggested earlier, that much of the increased body weight is largely due to increased body fat stores, glycogen and water."

When Canelo weighs in at 155 he will be lean and dehydrated. Khan won't be. He will likely be short around 4 or 5 pounds of lean muscle and that translates into a lot more weight on fight night.

Nobody can know whether his very real skills will carry him through (I very much doubt it) but Khan is going to be at a significant weight and strength disadvantage on fight night and no amount of training is going to make that up no matter who tells you it will.

Thank you! This fight should not have been approved by the NASC. Khan should've had a least one fight at SWW before this fight. It's not just the weight issue it's also the fact that Khan is chinny. Anyone picking Khan for this fight DKSAB or has an agenda.

The biggest problem for Khan is his chin, first solid shot from Canelo and it is all over. Khan simply does not have the chin to be able to take a flush shot from Canelo. Khan's chin will fail him.

Khan can gain as much muscle as he wants, hes never going to be a puncher like canelo
Furthermore that information is for natural lifters, Khan easily has the resources to get PEDs whenever he wants

I absouletly guarantee you that Floyd Mayweather at 140lbs would have still schooled canelo at 152lbs
Weight/lean muscle dont win fights alone

All the WWs that Khan has not fought, will be around after the Canelo fight, but the chance to fight Canelo @ 155, is now. Canelo will probably be fighting @ 160 in 2017, and I see him fighting @ 168 by the time he's 30. For Khan, this is high-risk, high-reward, and I respect him for accepting the challenge.

khan always talk about his attributes before a fight then go in there and look like a character out of a comic book. this won't be any different. as a boxing fan i'm watching the fight, but will not pay one cent.

Khan is 165 right now. There's PLENTY of photos recently of them standing side by side. Dan Rafeal saw both of them and even ADMITTED it on his Chatwrap. He looks in GREAT shape to me. But use your eyes! You need me to send one of the SEVERAL links with them side by side???

CANELO ALVAREZ is simply a better fighter then AMIR KHAN

Very interesting boxing match, a can't miss fight , and I'm hyped as is the boxing world , as I've noticed the huge buzz world wide, but skills pay the bills and SAUL CANELO ALVAREZ is simply the better fighter.
To me Khan prepares CANELO for GGG more then WADE prepares GGG for CANELO. CANELO wins with his skill set , he's a gifted fighter.
AMIR KHAN has great hand speed & foot speed as well as great technique and footwork and has experience at the championship level.
When CANELO dominates Khan, look for Golovkin camp to to duck CANELO and try to get him stripped instead of facing eachother in the ring and settling the beef , like gladiators like CANELO wants and how it should be.
