The lay off will do ward a lot of good. He won't do anything that he won't benefit from. He's learning new tricks. Ward is a spoiler in the same way as his more famous fellow american.

Kovalev will keep Ward at bay with that jab to the body. After two or three rounds of that, ward's hands will be very low to catch those punches, that's when the jabs to the face start breaking Ward's face down. When he tries to grab, Kovalev will PUNISH the left side of his ribs in the clinch, which will put an end to that.
Either Ward quits on the stool, quits claiming an injury or he gets caught with a big punch and he's knocked out cold.

Kovalev tends to get sloppy at times. Ward can exploit his sloppiness better than anyone else he's faced. It will be a tough fight for Ward but it's a fight he can win.

There's just no way to know how a fighter will react to Kovalev's power until it lands, and Kovalev has the skill to land it. It's very possible that with his skill, size, and power, he'll be too much for Ward. He's not some walk forward fighter swinging haymakers.
We'll get a hint when Ward gets back in the ring and we can see how he looks.

I find it hilarious that Ward left the stage before the fight ended in Kovalev-Pascal II
What's a matter Ward? Don't want to say anything on TV that you'll regret later?
If Ward ever dares to get in the ring verse Kovalev, it'll be the end of his career and all his nut-huggers will blame his inactivity
