Denium, yes, Fury is already the champion and as the champion, he has to face a mandatory challenger every year or two. In the WBA, his mandatory would normally be the regular champion. After he beats the regular champion, the interim champion would be upgraded to regular champion and become his next mandatory.

All the WBA is doing is using a "tournament" to explain a series of fights that were ALREADY HAPPENING.

    Fury was ALREADY fighting Klitschko.

    Ortiz's mandatory was ALREADY announced.

    Chagaev's mandatory was ALREADY announced.

If anything, Fury should be thrilled that the WBA isn't going to immediately go crown another regular champion after he beats them.

There is absolutely no reason for Fury fans to gripe about any of this. So either you have some sort of mental deficiency, or you're not understanding what the WBA announced.

Isaac, a US court won't allow Fury to face the regular champion until Oquendo does first, so the WBA is having Fury face the interim champion instead.

The "tournament" is simply a series of already scheduled fights. Have no idea what your gripe is here.

      Fury is the CHAMPION.

Why should he have to fight these contenders when he's already done the hard work and proved that he's the best. Sure have a tournament, and the winner gets a shot at the champion, Tyson Fury.

that's EXACTLY what they're doing. the WBA didn't order fury to fight klitschko. he was ALREADY fighting klitschko.

when his mandatory is due, fury will face the interim champion since the regular champion must face oquendo due to a US court order.

when his next mandatory is due, fury will face the regular champion.

the only thing out of the ordinary is that he's facing the interim & regular champions in the wrong order, due to the US court order preventing him from facing the regular champion.

are you still having trouble understanding the situation?

The fact is that WBO involves Fury into a complicated tournament, while Wilder fights his stablemates and possibly (only possibly) Povetkin. On another hand, IBF immediately stripped Fury and made that mockup fight from which Martin (another Al Haymon fighter !!!) emerged 'champion'. In case Wilder wants to 'unify' with Martin, then the Povetkin fight falls through... a.s.o.

MDPop, the tournament is not complicated, the WBO has nothing to do with it, and Fury's only involvement is fighting who he was going to fight anyway.

All the WBA did was try to find a way to explain to the public all of the upcoming fights in the heavyweight division that were already going to be taking place in the next year or two.

There is not a single fight in that "tournament" that wasn't already announced, other than Fury being mandated to fight the interim champion before the regular champion instead of vice versa.

WBO was a typo, of course.

And Wilder didn't take the WBC belt from Vitali and he is likely to get the IBF belt from a can -- not from Furry (who was stripped) or from Wlad.

Boxing fans have zero reason to give the WBA the benefit of the doubt about this. If it actually happens and there is actually one champion and it actually leads to something similar in the rest of the divisions, then I'll give them praise.

I see straight through them, they don't want Fury as champion and are desperate to strip him. It's all smoke and mirrors.

Fury should just bin all the belts and keep the ring title. Let these other losers scratch around in the dirt for the belts. Until someone beats Tyson Fury, he's the champion.

Fury isn't going to be champ very long if he has to fight Luis Ortiz next.

Hell, if Klitschko wins the rematch I don't think he is going to keep the belts very long either if he has to fight Luis Ortiz afterwards.
