As for Wlad not fighting Sanders, well, sure I would have liked him to. But he took time off after the Sanders fight to regroup, got a couple of warm-up KO wins behind him, and then the HW picture looked like this- Sanders and Vitali were WBC #1 and #2 and Wlad and Brewster were WBO #1 and #2. So Wlad's option for a belt was not with Sanders but with Brewster- the fight he took.
Lennox had to fight McCall and Rahman in rematches, because they stood between him and the belts. Wlad has always gone after the best fighters and the titles available to him, with the exception of choosing Byrd over Brewster, but that was a logical choice that I agree with 1000%.
