Comments Thread For: Margules Reacts To Top Rank/Golden Boy Claims on PBC

Warriors Boxing Leon Margules’ business has picked up since the inception of the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) brand. Working hand in hand in promoting the PBC brand, his promotion has staged PBC branded events on SpikeTV and last Saturday's Thurman vs. Collazo card on ESPN.

The PBC brand, and it's creator Al Haymon, have come under fire by two promotional heavyweights. Golden Boy Promotions is suing Haymon and PBC for over $300 million. And Top Rank is doing the same for $100 million. Margules and other promoters in conjunction with the PBC brand are also named in the suit.

    As to that last paragraph....

Shouldnt the promoter have most of those who fought on the card under promotional contracts? Isnt that why oscar and richard had their messy fiasco.

This is called damage control. This fool knows damn well he is not promoting these fights. Haymon is promoting these fights and shooting him a small flat fee to be the front man to circumvent the laws. He calls no shots and handles none of the decisions that any real promoter would do for an event. We already have had multiple Haymon fighters slip up in interviews and call Haymon their promoter. We have another fighter who posted his check after his fight online via Instagram and the check had Haymon's name on it. Something that only a promoter does not a manager. It's illegal for a one person to act as a promoter and manager. You can only be one or the other and Haymon is clearly doing both. It's only a matter of time till courts and the government get's involved and forces Haymon to clarify his role and involvement. At which point he will have to decide whether he wants to be a promoter or manager and he'll end up paying a huge settlement to make these lawsuits go away.

The manager's job is to look out for the interests of the boxer. The promoter's job is to look out for the interests of the promoter. Thats why haymon will win cause the spirit of the law is to help the boxer not to protect the promoter

Why? Who says that a fighter needs to be obligated to a promoter beyond the current card they are on?

Other than 'that's how it's always been', what is the basis for a fighter, especially one at the highest levels of the sport, wanting to do business in this manner?

The Chavez jr check showed that Haymon sports wrote a check to Chavez jr promotions. So Haymon wrote a check to a promotional company, there is no problem there.

And why would he have to write a check to settle? He doesn't owe TR or GB anything, he has no responsibility to them.

Thats what the business has become, but I don't see why its a requirement. The promoters job is ultimately to promote a show, not have fighters under contract to his promotion. I think that strategy has its pros & cons. Sign fighters = more risk, but more reward, unsigned fighters = less risk, but less reward. Thats why most of the reputable, but mostly lower level guys PBC is dealing with are a perfect fit.

One of the biggest reasons I'm a PBC fan is cuz its getting some of the power out of the hands of promoters. Its a shame boxers are desperate enough to have to sign some of these deals that they don't realize are ****ty & restrictive of their own desires years later.

LOL this guy claiming he's not a sham promoter. So explain how his company used Haymon's money to bid $3mil on Dirrell Degale, then didn't even promote the fight, Dibella did. Stop.

so basically anyone but top rank and gbp who have almost killed the sport is a sham promoter? thats ridiculous these promoters are in it for themselves they dont care about the fighters. they are trying to use a law set up to protect the boxers to protect themselves so that they dont have to pay boxers more money. think about how ridiculous that is and somehow you guys cheer it on. I honestly and utterly dont understand why people hate the pbc so much. the more and more they go along the better the fights are getting not to mention boxers are finally getting paid instead of the promoters thats a good thing. At some point hbo gbp and top rank are going to have to come to the reality that they cant continue to have a monopoly over the sport its over they are going to have to work with haymon and they are going to have to pay their fighters what they are worth. I mean honestly what the **** drives you guys to cheer for these promoters who rip off the fans and the fighters and root against a guy who is giving us more fights. I understand he made bad fights in the past in order to build stars for pbc but now that pbc is here he is making these guys fight each other. Not only that he is showing he is willing to work with all promotions the only ones who are refusing are main event gbp and top rank im sorry but the guys rooting against the pbc are to worried about the drama of the sport rather then the sport itself. those who cant see pbc is good for fighters and fans a like are nothing but fan boys the days of our lives crew of boxing period
