Fans here wanted another Tito, and Cotto was the polar opposite. His personality was always a serious one, and this irritated the fans, who, almost automatically, started seeing Cotto as a threat to Tito's legacy. It became the kind of scenario where a new athlete was (and is) castigated because fans can't let go of the athlete that came before him. "How could a guy who isn't as outgoing as Tito outdo him? A guy who thinks he's better than us?" "If he keeps winning, no one will remember Tito." I feel those kind of thoughts have been (and are) in many Puerto Ricans' minds. Another big aspect is just culturally rooted; we don't support each other, preferring to envy and have everyone lose than to see one person win.

Ultimately, if we limit this to boxing, it's the reason why fighters like JuanMa and Verdejo have enjoyed strong support among Puerto Ricans. They were seen like people as "humble" as Tito, fighters whose personalities merited holding the torch. It hasn't played out the way those fans have wanted it to, however. Cotto has been the top fighter on the island for years. In fact, Cotto is even being ranked higher than Tito in the Puerto Rico ATG list by Dan Rafael. That, and the fact Cotto has become Puerto Rico's first four division world champion, could be why Tito is speaking this way. There is no Tito torch anymore, not in the sense of actual boxing. Puerto Rico's torch is now Cotto's torch. That is a tough pill to swallow for Tito, considering his economic troubles. I don't even blame him; I'm just disappointed. I don't think a victory over Canelo would change anything. Not even a victory over Golovkin. It's just the way it'll always be.
This pretty much sums it up. But while Cotto's accomplishments look good statistically on paper at least,Miguel would never outshine Tito's willingness to please his fans both win or lose.

I mean how many times has Tito preached this "A side" bull s h i t that so many fighter's today use to not only make fights but squander them?

How many times did Tito move up multiple weight classes and demand a catch weight especially with titles on the line?

When Hopkins was the boogeyman of the middleweight class Tito didn't think twice in throwing down. Contrast this with a reluctant Cotto to GGG. And let's not forget had he defeated Bernard the next fight was a mega show dow with RJJ. This alone speaks volumes.
To further add,Trinidad NEVER used a size disparity excuse when not only moving up in a weight class but used his smaller stature as a bargaining chip to not face more formidable foes. I mean can you imagine Tito going to 154 depriving us of that epic fight with Vargas because Tito thought at heart he was still a welterweight?

As I stated previously, Tito took the road lessed traveled by taking the risks that Miguel wouldn't have. And that to me and so many Puerto Ricans hold so much more weight than what looks good on paper.

    Hence Tito >>>>> Cotto.

    Real talk.

Dude you are freakin' crazy to think that Trinidad has ever been jealous of Cotto! A prime welterweight or jr middleweight Trinidad would have knockout Cotto within 4 rounds.

In fact, Cotto would be hard pressed to beat any of the champs that Tito did; and I am not Puerto Rican just a diehard boxing fan and ex fighter!!!!

Fernando Vargas, David Reid, Oscar De La Hoya, Ike Quartey, Pernell Whitaker, and a prime Shane Mosley just to name a few fighters from that era that would have demolished Cotto!!!
