Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Announces Retirement From Boxing

TYC Sports provided a transcript to krikya360.com, where former two division world champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28KOs) announced his retirement from boxing at age 40. Martinez made the announcement at the ongoing International Boxing Hall of Fame festivities in Canastota, New York.

Martinez has been out of the ring since last June's knockout loss to Miguel Cotto. Ever since he defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in September of 2012, Martinez has been dealing with numerous injuries and his body was breaking down. Martinez was barely able to stand, due to existing knee injuries, in his loss to Cotto.

Good career. His first fight with Paul Williams and the Kelly Pavlik fight were great.

One of the greatest pound for pound fighters when at his peak and healthy. Always enjoyed his fights and hope nothing but the best for him. The knee was just too much to overcome. Cong**** on a late but great career Maravilla! Next stop Canastota! Hasta la victoria siempre!

Smart decision. He accomplished all that he needed to do, and his fight against Cotto proved that he was no longer in his prime.

He was a great fighter but a former cyclist not a lifelong boxer and his style was all movement and stamina.

Once his knees went it was sad to watch him still try. Good to see him retire.

Had a wonderful career, thanks for the memories, the entertainment and your humbleness as a champion. Wish you all the best with your future.
