Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” - Mayweather: And Then There Was One

by David P. Greisman - For years, for longer than seemed necessary, for what felt like a lifetime, two questions were asked about Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao: Why had they not fought yet? And what would happen if they did?

Once the bell rang to open the first round, the first question and its many answers no longer mattered. Here were the two best welterweights in the world, two of the best fighters in boxing today, two of the best fighters of this generation, finally standing across from each other in the ring after five and a half years of anticipation.

For 12 rounds, they fought to settle the second question — though reality seemed to settle in long before the final bell sounded.

    Floyd Mayweather stood alone.

From the beginning, he almost completely neutralized one of the greatest offensive fighters in the sport, a dynamo whose fleet feet and even faster fists had left so many opponents flailing futilely, made them cover up out of self preservation, and broke highly accomplished, tremendously brave, remarkably capable and phenomenally tough men down until they acquiesced, be it mentally, physically or both. Grown men crying...
              Pac man crying...
              Roach crying...
              Arum crying...
If he would've just stood still... THATS NOT BOXING
Mayweather landed 34 percent of his punches to Pacquiao’s 19 percent. BUT HE WAS RUNNING and hitting pac more than pac hit him
Pacquiao landed only 81 punches in total, his fewest in a 12-round fight within the last seven years. Mayweather landed 81 power punches, as many punches as Pacquiao landed overall. BUT HE WAS SOMEHOW RUNNING, BUT CLOSE ENOUGH TO HIT MANNY?
You guys have as manny excuses as Manny...
Someone go create a sport and make guys just take turns hitting each other and play NO defense...Wasnt Algeiri running but somehow pac knocked him down 6 times....
Bradley broke his ankle trying to get out of the way...
But Floyd was supposed to stand still, and let his competition (ok competition, not) hit him at will? Ali didnt stand still, SRR didnt stand still, SRL didnt stand still, didnt manny say it wouldnt matter what Floyd did cause he was prepared? Manny got exposed in and outta the ring.

Floyds staged fights that are suppose to happen in both fighters primes, not when its convenient for a certain style (Floyds) to look good. When is Floyd really going to fight skilled boxers ala Lara, Thurman, etc., his mandatories? No way, he will retire because they will match Floyds ring generalship.

The only way I buy a Floyd fight is when he honestly fights black fighters ala Thurman, Lara, any of his mandatories who has the total packages to easily beat Floyd. I see nothing in Floyds style that makes him unbeatable. He's very good, but not great. Go black. Get KO'ed.

You know, it's funny, but my phone has been blowing up all weekend with "boxing experts" who think they know boxing but have no idea. They're all complaining about May-Pac and call him a coward, running all night, this is no Sugar Ray Leonard, stuff like that.

My response: "Is this the first time you watch Mayweather fight?"

I mean, what were people expecting? Even "boxing experts" like Lennox Lewis (by the way, just because you boxed and became a world champion doesn't necessarily mean you are fit for boxing commentary), predicted this fight to be all action all the time. Really Lennox??

Mayweather waited for Pac on the ropes, and time and time again he moved to his left, Pac missed, then landed a left hook to Manny's face. This happened throughout the fight and showed me that Manny Pacquiao is a limited boxer who, until Saturday, has not needed to adapt inside the ropes.

The delusion that he won the fight and the BS excuse of his injury afterwards (Remember Roach said Manny was 110% ready and fit and was even hurting him on the pads, so he "feared" for Mayweather's health?) is really insulting and I personally lost some respect for Manny; be a man and admit you're not at his level.

I don't want to see a rematch. Why would I? The fight wasn't even competitive. Arum/Roach/Pacquiao are all begging for another nice payday, but I don't think Mayweather needs to give it to them.

If I were to guess, I think $ takes on either Thurman, Khan or Danny Garcia.

                    Anyway, good article.
