But I have found from practice that they are extremely strong/ robust.

Also they are used to strike with in the martial arts a lot too, and while a lot of traditional martial arts don't pack as much power as a boxer a lot of them still use hip rotation etc so its quite close in power.

You could use them to strike with a longer hook, it would work especially well in MMA, because I don't think they even have any padding on the 2nd knuckles.
In his book Jack Dempsey straight up said too try and connect with your last 3 knuckles because it generates more power, right next too a diagram showing that it's supposed to generate that power because there's a straight line from your shoulder to them knuckles (He describes it as the 'power line' or something similar) and the power goes off slightly if you hit with the first 2, read it again.

Chances of mangling your hands are very high over a long fight punching like that. If you put real bad intention on your shots anyway

One guy who you can clearly see uses the main knuckles is Golovkin. That's why his punches are looping, to make contact with the main knuckles, probably another reason he's such a power puncher.

This thread is full of idiocy.

You punch with your two biggest knuckles, leg/hip/shoulder/arm is the mechanism of a "proper" punch. A straight right hand has the wrist, forearm, arm and shoulder behind it.

Hitting with the "door knocking" knuckles would lead to injury and a total lack of power.

This, read the book more carefully, he meant aim to hit with the second to last knuckle, and you will find yourself hitting with the last three knuckles because of the angle of the hand.

and you've successfully contributed to this idiocy.

The last three knuckles are off set from this 'line of power' that rolls through your body. The first two will deliver all of the power, the last three will be softer and less damaging. .......... Actually it's the exact opposite Rockin. The last 3 knuckles are in line with your power line as are the finger bones in your hand which are aligned with the bones in your forearm, the bone for your pointer finger isn't. The power line travels down the outside of your forearm/hand. If you punch with the first two (pointer and middle) your power line gets broken right at the very end and all that kinetic energy is exerting force on your wrist causing it to want to bend inwards.

In Dempsey's book he gives an excellent exercise to demonstrate the power line.

                - Stand in front of a wall arms length away with a closed fist

                - Your fist should be placed on the wall at your own chin level (in terms of height and centering it) and just barely touching the wall.

                - Now lean slightly forward and start placing some of your weight behind it so your fist begins to press more solidly against the wall.

What you will find is the first knuckle that makes contact with the wall is in fact your pinky knuckle on the outside of your fist which demonstrates where the power line runs and where the transfer of energy to your target should take place. This is true whether you do the exercise with your fist positioned so it is palm facing the floor or palm facing inwards.

Dempsey states that the pinky knuckle is the weakest along with being on the outside of your fist which makes it too fragile and vulnerable so you move one over and aim your punch with the knuckle on your ring finger and land with the last three knuckles (pinky, ring, middle) AKA Three Knuckle Punching

I see it a lot in Choy Lay Fut, particularly panther fist style.

It's meant for striking soft areas like the throat, groin, temple, bridge of the nose etc..

It wouldn't work with gloves on.

All I'm saying is I use the bottom three because with wraps and gloves on they generate more power for me. That's even how we were taught. Using the two big door knocker knuckles caused more injury. The wrist supports the bottom three. I see a lot of people mentioning other martial arts using the knuckles but keep in mind this is boxing and we are using gloves. Even though your knues may be tough I still think using the bottom three is better
