Leonard, Duran, Cuevas, Hearns, Hagler, Benitez put everything on the line and proved their greatness. If they were in Floyd's era, or the reverse, Floyd would have a nice home in Grand Rapids and probably a real family and ruled 140 but he sure as hell wouldn't be in a mansion with 10 Ho's. He would have had a more normal life and he would be the B side to Leonard, Duran, and Hearns. But I doubt he would have fought any of those three. If he did, he would have lost the first attempt and went back to 140. The only shots Floyd would be calling are the ones from a barstool. These were ATG's fighting ATG's.

great, great fight. I was just a 12 yr old kid as well. it felt like the biggest event of the year-even bigger than the Super Bowl. Special day for me-my mom's birthday was Sept 16th.Last edited by The Big Dunn; 09-23-2014, 10:09 AM.

Chaves Jr walked away from a contract extension. What should he agree to a contract thats not in his best interest for GGG? Other considerations came into play.

That fight was the SHOWDOWN ! It was in the papers on tv, no internet , we scoured everybit of news possible, the talk was in the air , two PRIME TOP ELITES,,,,,,BEST of the BEST,,,facing it off in the ring.
Electricity was in the AIR and like Mr. Lyle who did a good job on this post sides were drawn. I knew some folk from Mich. and they were ardent Tommy Hitman Hearns fans, it was crazy.
It is saddening to me to see what some have done in boxing today compared to those days.
From the days before color tv you had to SCOUR all sources of media and devour it, and thats from 10 years old and up. Not even thinking , WOW , IMA BOXING FAN !!!!! That never entered ones mind. You were just caught up in the history, every old picture, Nat Flicshers sp "science of boxing" book, the Louis Legend, the Ring Mag. made you get wide eyed and to top it off there were legit "GREAT" fighters on the scene. You put on boxing gloves with the neighborhood.
Today with all the money its like a sorry ### circus.
You hunger for the BEST TOP ELITES to face each other but all you get are EXCUSES and DEMANDS.
Thanks LYLE for a good refreshing read.

Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Pryor, Arguello... Even Oscar & Mosley were throwbacks to the Legends that fought before them. Those were real Super Fights. Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran had 9 FIGHTS between them!!! Oscar & Mosley fought each other twice in their prime. Pryor & Arguello had TWO epic wars between them! It's sad that today's agenda is about getting rich first, rich second, and rich third. Too many organizations, too many belts, too many promoters seeking to hoard their fighters rights, like a Pimp. Fighters won't open their mouth and MAKE fights, and allow money to be secondary. All a bunch of puzzy's today trying to act gangster, live high profile, and not fight each other. Mayweather, Ward, Khan, Quillin, Stevenson, Chavez Jr..... They all want the big payday, but not willing to risk things against the best of the best. Pantie-waste divas.
Like a PIMP = HAYMON,,,,,,,,you flat NAILED IT !!!!!

And why bring up Chavez calling out Golovkin as if it matters when Chavez is the one walking away? You're acting like Golovkin should be fighting Chavez. Well, he would have already if the other side was willing. Why bring it up?

Doesn't beat a prime Oscar and hard to say if he beats a Whitaker or Trinidad though I believe he beats Trinidad. He ranks below a number of welterweights per that division over the course of history which is not a bad thing. He never fought an ATG welterweight but his body of work over several divisions earns him ATG status.
