The referee made a bad call, no doubt. But I don't suspect foul play. Matthysse hardly looked like he needed to be protected at that point. Just a poor split second judgement call.

Some bad calls from referees are understandable. An example being when a fight is called off when a fighter was clearly able to continue. In that case a million things are happening and a referee has to make a split-second decision. But how is it difficult to tell whether a man is on his feet after counting to 10?

You're out at 10. If the ref counts to 10, the fight is over. Otherwise whats the point in having a 10 count?
Could he have continued? Probably....but he got counted out. The ref followed the rules.
