That brings up another issue I had with Lara's performance. He had many, many opportunities to open up and fire off combos. When he did, he landed beautifully...beautifully! But he had many more opportunities where he made Canelo miss, but didn't make him pay. As I mentioned before, in the pro game you don't get much credit for simply making your opponent whiff. But judges tend to notice if your opponent keeps pressing the action and you don't do much in return. The fact is, Saul pressed the action all night; while Lara was content to make him miss, land the occasional 1-2 and take the occasional hard body shot. That makes for close cards...and maddening losses against a cash cow.
It's why Angulo went for broke. He took a ton of punishment from Lara because he opened up and was swinging and aiming for anything above the belt line when he had Lara on the ropes and he'd also be throwing while walking down Lara. He had no respect for Lara's punching power and paid the price for it late.
Canelo wasn't willing to do that. He walked down Lara but it wasn't behind a jab. He never tried to punch from range to get inside. The times he did throw, he was close in range and would let off 3-4 punch combos that were either partially blocked or whiffed, or he'd land one or two body shots at a time. When he did try to punch from range, he missed badly or Lara would beat him to the punch. There were times Lara would catch him coming in.
For as much as some of you are saying Lara needed to do more.... What did Canelo do out of those four categories Lederman listed?Last edited by BoxPrep; 07-16-2014, 11:14 PM.

But there were so many other opportunities he missed. I have to believe it's because Lara didn't feel it was safe enough. Now that I think about it, I don't think there was a single exchange in that fight. It was either Saul landing to the body and Lara covering up or moving away, or Landy landing a combo and moving away. Am I wrong?

Carry on with your 13,000 posts baby girl. No need for me to disrespect Floyd or any other fighters, I'll leave that to the Cubanas.

Canelo landed to the body and it didn't slow down Lara. Angulo landed to the body and it took a toll, Lara was dropped twice in that fight.
I'm trying to figure out why Canelo didn't open up more...? Maybe he felt something that persuaded him not to just take two to land one..
