Comments Thread For: Hopkins on His Golden Boy Status, Schaefer's Departure

IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins is now in a very interesting position with Richard Schaefer's recent departure from Golden Boy Promotions. After months of internal friction between Schaefer, the longtime company CEO, and Golden Boy President and majority shareholder Oscar De La Hoya - Schaefer announced his resignation from the company on Monday.

Hopkins, who is good friends with both Schaefer and De La Hoya, is also a partner/shareholder in Golden Boy.

"As far as my situation, I'm still a shareholder with Golden Boy. Richard is still a shareholder with Golden Boy, and he still has a stake with Golden Boy, just not as the CEO. It affects me in two ways. I'm a partner and I'm still involved and I'm still a shareholder - and I'm still a live dog, a very live dog in the ring," Hopkins told krikya360.com.

    Good interview.
He praises Schaefer and al haymon a lot without bashing Oscar.

Looks like he is going to have a meeting with his team to decide things.

Good article.. Hopkins is a straight shooter..

I like how he gives calzaghe some props and mentions him as a great fighter along side Floyd, oscar, Tito, etc..

This does not look good for gbp.. The comment about having no fights schedule is interesting considering gbp was having a lot of cards, big and small for years now... My bet is that oscar will see how tough it is to get everything done and will use arum and top rank to help schedule fights between the 2 stables.

While I don't think Golden Boy will be much without Schaefer, I think no fights being scheduled in July may have more to do with the world cup than anything else. I wouldn't want to compete with that.

Bu-bu-bu-but Schaefer left because Oscar wanted to end the "Cold War" and he wants to keep protecting Floyd from Manny

At the end of the day Oscar got outta rehab talking all this recovery stuff. Making amends with people he's had problems with. Letting the past be past, etc. And while that's awesome for him on a personal level. Business wise, it makes little sense. And not only is he, probably unknowingly, undoing a lotta what's put GBP on top. He's also stepping on the toes of the folks that have been there since day one, in the trenches, making GBP what it is today. He needs to check himself before he's outta business sooner rather than later.

Arum will be loving this. Things looked bad for TR but now they look a whole lot worse for GBP.

I like the fact that Oscar is trying to end the cold war and reached out to Arum but I don't think this relationship is going to last long. They may be friends today. Ask me again tomorrow.
