Comments Thread For: Guillermo Rigondeaux, Diaz No Longer Working Together

As Top Rank announced Guillermo Rigondeaux's final fight under their banner for July 19 in Macau, news emerged that the Cuban is no longer working with esteemed trainer Pedro Díaz.

Díaz, who previously trained Miguel Cotto, Odlanier Solis and others, informed BoxingScene via text that he has other boxing and MMA projects now and is not working with Rigondeaux.

Diaz is an overrated trainer anyway. He turned Cotto into a headhunter and couldnt motivate Solis to get in shape. He also stayed in the USA when Solis fought Thompson overseas. There are lots of better trainers than Diaz. Im sure Cotto and Rigo did not leave him without a reason.

Can anyone shed some more light on this? Wasn't Rigo with Diaz since the amateurs?

Waiting to read rigo is no longer working with top rank anymore . Pedro was with him in his biggest fight against ducknaire , Rubio was with him when he kock down 5 times kenedy and when rigo knocked down 2 times marroquin .
Both have done a great job with him ; Pedro is more of the Cuban boxing school where hitting and not getting hit back prevails and Jorge is more of the offense .... Rigo will beat anyone regardless , he is a master. thanks al Haymon , showtime .

Rigo at this point could very well do his thing without a trainer, but he knows better a good trainer always helps no matter how good you are.

I'm not one to tell Rigo who should train him but I think he can use an offensive minded trainer to complement the skillset he already has.

Showtime and Schaefer don't like boring boxers as well.

"You look at a Marcos Maidana, Joselito Lopez, a Danny Garcia, a Lucas Matthysse, an Amir Khan, a Canelo, a Kirkland, an Angulo, and the list goes on and on. That's what the fight fans and the TV networks want to see. They are very invested in winning and losing, but they want to see excitng fights. It used to be for a long time, that you had to go back in line and start over again. That's not the case anymore. Joselito Lopez, just because he lost - it doesn't mean he goes back to the end of the line, he's right back in the mix. I think up until a few years ago that's not the way boxing worked. I think we took a page out of the UFC's playbook, because with the UFC excitement is rewarded," Schaefer said to krikya360.com

"I think TV networks, at least Showtime, is rewarding excitement as well. When you see a fight like a Rigondeaux or a Gamboa - they don't have very crowd pleasing styles. And I think as a result it makes them much more difficult to sell, and it has nothing to do with promoting."

"Lara is tough to sell." - Schaefer
