Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — Stevenson Gives Kovalev the Business

by David P. Greisman - Adonis Stevenson is the lineal light heavyweight champion. It is a position he earned with power when he knocked Chad Dawson down with one punch, and it is power that has kept him there since, with stoppage wins over Tavoris Cloud and Tony Bellew.

Sergey Kovalev holds a world title in the light heavyweight division and is vying for Stevenson’s spot. He, too, is a man who believes in and relies on his power. He won his title belt by blowing through Nathan Cleverly and has defended it since with knockouts of Ismayl Sillakh and Cedric Agnew.

Stevenson has scored knockouts or technical knockouts in all but three of his victories. Kovalev has picked up the KO or TKO in all but two of his wins. That is why we wanted to see them face each other. This isn’t a case of unstoppable force vs. immovable object. Rather, it would be unstoppable force vs. unstoppable force.

We now know who has more power, though in this case we speak figuratively instead of literally.

It is Stevenson, who proved it without ever stepping into the ring with Kovalev.

It remains to be seen whether Stevenson ever will step into the ring with him.

A year ago, neither man had fought on HBO or Showtime, the two major networks for boxing in the United States. Stevenson’s 2012 fight with Don George was originally supposed to be on a Showtime card underneath Tavoris Cloud vs. Jean Pascal, but that show was canceled and Stevenson-George ended up on WealthTV, as did Stevenson’s early 2013 rematch win over Darnell Boone. Kovalev, meanwhile, was being featured on NBC Sports Network boxing broadcasts. [Click Here To Read More]

That sequence of commentary by the HBO team is the greatest in history

        TITSworth incident

HBO (Home Boob Office) Team certainly milked the TITSworth incident!
        Excellent Improvisation...

I have no problem with Stevenson avoiding Kovalev if he thinks that fight is not in his best interest (finance or health-wise).

But I do have a problem with Stevenson talking all kinds of trash about Kovalev and his team, going on tirades about how Kovalev is beneath him, how easily he would beat him etc. despite the fact that he has no intention of fighting him.

Trash talk is fine, but if it's about a guy you are clearly avoiding, it's incredibly lame.

I cant ever see Froch or Kessler moving up, their careers are pretty much done and they certainly wouldn't fight Kovalev as bigger money fights are elsewhere.

Also Groves has just really cut his teeth as a recognisable name and still have alot to accomplish in Super Middle. I think Andre Ward is much more likely than those 3 to move up and I really can't see that happening either.

I really would like to see how his clinching, jarring style would fair against a bigger/stronger opponent like Kovalev.

There are a few things I take from all of this:

-Stevenson clearly doesn't want to fight Kovalev. He desreves any criticism he gets.

-Al Haymon was able to get STevenson $1.75 mil (allegedly) for a Fonfura fight. That is unbelievable. He definitely hurts the sport by his actions but he also helps the individuals he represents, which is his job.

-HBO needs to bring back GBP and Haymon fighters and fire Herschman. There was no reason these guys weren't forced to fight last year. I agree with the points of dan rafael and Kevin Iole-Herschman being cheap and ****** really messed this up.

He refused to put GBP/Haymon fighters on. Haymon has responded by taking away HBO's biggest non ppv fight of the year by signing Stevenson. Thats a crucial blow to HBO in the short term.

-Its time for ESPN to step up and invest heavily in boxing. If they use their vast resources they can definitely make great fights. They would be able to put on fights between rival promotional companies as well.

                Just my two cents.

The way I understand it, HBO didn't want to overpay Stevenson for a sh.it fight with no guarantee that he would face Kovalev next. I can't really blame them for it.

                  Agree with the rest.

I agree HBO made the best move for them at the time. That said, this fight should have been held in 2013 and the cost of the Fonfura bout only became an issue because Herschman's failed to lock both fighters up earlier last year.

He left an opening and Sowtime took full advantage. If we did that on our jobs you already know what happens.
