YOu guys making the case that big strong NFL players would be good boxers only because they are big and strong are just plain wrong.

Look at Ed "Too Tall" Jones, for example. At 6'9" he was being touted as the next great HW. Got smacked around by a little Mexican HW in front of his Dallas Cowboy teammates.

Takes more than mucles to make a fight. FFS someone has to state this on a boxing forum?

Although many including myself have been critical of Deontay Wilder's opposition last year, now in his 6th year he's finally fighting a decent opponent in Malik Scott.

But Tyson Fury has taken a step back and is scheduled to fight the old "Tatooed Man" from Argentina, Omar Basile.

Obviously, Malik Scott is better than Omar Basile.

They don't mean that, there is a similar discussion on Sherdog now. What some people are saying is, the NFL and NBA have the best American athletes competing there.

With such a large pool of talented athletes, there are many potential elite fighters or champions who are there. Offcourse they'd need enough training, but the point is the top American athletes go to those sports. So people wonder what would happen if some of them switched to Boxing or MMA.

Yep also let's consider that Wilder only started training in Boxing at the age of 20, so he needs time to improve. If he beats Scott he should continue to fight against opponents of that caliber or step up in competition.

You say bigger and stronger, that's all well and good - but I think past a certain point size and level of raw strength is a hindrance in boxing rather than a help - increased muscle mass means you tire more quickly, too much height makes for an awkward fighter with likely no inside game and generally the movement and athleticism will diminish. I would say Grant and Wilder are just perfect examples of the type of untapped talent that would be - that's the size and weight that's the first part of the jigsaw, after that it's a lottery as to whether they can meet the other criteria.

And ok, yes, Wilder is top 10 (although that isn't much in this era) - what has he done to really achieve that ranking? Just quantity of bum wins v quality, although I do take some peoples' points about him compensating for lack of amateur experience...On the flipside, it's different from the amateurs because you usually won't come up against out of shape bums there...and if you win an Olympic medal you clearly have some skills and enough experience in the ams.

Michael Grant was similar in terms of showing his true 'potential' when he came up against Lewis, a less big and athletic guy but one that showed that skills, fighter smarts and similar qualities was more important in boxing.
            I stated exactly that.

This guy is for real, I dont think he'd beat Wlad but anyone else is getting it, that right hand lands on anyone and its over.
Chisora, Povetkin, Fury, Stiverne, Arreola and Pulev would waste this bum.
