LOuis, ali, floyd and ODH were all olympic gold medal winners. floyd wasn't. Teenage girls absolutely bought ppv's of ODH and attended the weigh ins in droves. He opened up an untapped market.

As for floyd, he chose his road. He was never going to get there the way you suggest while ODH was there. Same way Hagler couldn't get there while SRL was there. Floyd very well may eclipse ODH's ppv sales so you can't say he has killed anything.

Like I said on this forum plenty of times the last African American crossover star that didn't go the bad boy route was SRL. Since then we've seen Shane, Winky, Hopkins, Roy, SweetPea, Toney, Holyfield, etc They never got as big.

Now look at Mayweather and Mike Tyson. They crossed over.

Shane was starting to become popular but as soon as he got the win that elevated himself among casual fans, he got dismantled by Vernon Forrest.

Oscar got big because of a combination of things. His gold medal story, him being Mexican-American and appealing to a large rabid fan base, his fighting style, him being able to speak english and his looks.

If Canelo could speak fluent English hed crossover into the mainstream conscious. Im sure GBP has discussed how big Canelo could get.

Broner is also trying to cultivate a second gig as a rapper, something floyd wasn't trying to do. Broner seems far more "brand conscious" than your run of the mill **** talkers in boxing. I guess its the times.

is he likely to take off in that arena? what i heard of him rapping didn't sound too promising, but successful musicians aren't always talented.


i guess my point was that Broner doesn't even need to convince anyone he's a thug or a bad guy or a villain. he's got a buoyant, self-confident, attractive personality without that stuff - the kind that will irritate stuck-up folk who can't deal with brash and hyper, but that others will be drawn to because they can see he's a fresh, fun guy (like Camacho). he needs to let that shine out.

Teenage girls don't buy PPV's or attend fights in majority. Boxing fans do, grown men were fans of Oscar, and not just Latino's. Everyone liked him because he was personable, good looking and had a great story.

It all ties in. Leonard was the same way, so was Ali and so was Joe Lewis before him. It's not about race or gender, it's about the whole package and IMO Floyd has it but killed it with his ignorant antics.

This is the truth right here. FWIW man you are debating with guys who just started to follow the sport a couple of years ago. No one would be dumb enough to state that "teenage girls" were the reason Oscar was doing big numbers. Oscar was liked by everyone and they all bought his ppv. fights.

Also, Tyson was a star way before his antics. He would have done huge numbers based on his style alone. Yep his antics is what made him sale, post prison, but that was due to the fact he was done as an elite fighter as his heart wasn't into the sport anymore.

Ali, Camacho, Paez, Tapia, Hamed, these guys all had a sense of fun in common. they were just being themselves, they were charming. Broner can be like that naturally. he doesn't have to come up with a device like Mayweather did.
