Tucker was pretty good. Biggs was solid. gotta give him a bit of cred for waxing Holmes, too, even that version. i take your point about the general fringeyness of the div in the Kid Dynamite days, but there's about enough of substance in his run to save him from Lacy status, lol.

It's an interesting parallel though on the other end in regards to the Douglas and Calzaghe fights is all, along with their pre-fight perception comparisons.

I was never impressed by Lacy. I remember being surprised when I joined this forum and saw how highly people thought of him. I bet on Calzaghe to beat him at the time even though I really hadn't seen much of Calzaghe. I just figured he would get a hometown nod at the least.

Lacy looked limited against Sheika and Vanderpool as other people have stated but I remember questioning his ability the first time I saw him on ESPN against Richard "The Alien" Grant.

If you just look at boxrec and see the scorecards it looks like a lopsided win for Lacy but I remember thinking it was a much closer fight and there were many times in the fight where Grant made Lacy look ****** and he landed nearly the same number of punches in the fight.

Grant - famously suckerpunched in the ring by James Butler - the guy who killed Max Kellerman's brother - had been knocked out early by Antwun Echols prior to facing Lacy.

Lacy was a good young fighter, powerful, athletic, and unbeaten when he faced Calzaghe.

He hadn't faced great opposition, but he had handled several decent fighters with astonishing ease, so impressed was krikya360.com that it had 95% of it's staff predict Lacy to knock Calzaghe out, the general line was "Calzaghe is a good fighter, but Lacy is on another level, he's the real deal"

Respected boxingscene posters like "runwithknives" said Lacy was future P4P material, the total package, and would sleepwalk to victory over Calzaghe, many agreed.

Lacy most likely underestimated Calzaghe, and quickly found himself in a lot deeper than he expected, suffering a schooling. However you have to give him credit for hanging tough, but on that night he had no answers.

Lacy had to go back to the start, and in his next fight with Vitali Tsypko, he suffered a disasterous torn rotator cuff, (the same injury that caused Vitali Klitschko to quit against Chris Byrd, to prevent lasting damage)

Lacy bravely (and quite possibly ******ly) fought through the pain for another 8 rounds, he never looked the same again.

Alot of fight fans jumped on this hype train which was subsequently derailed by Joe Calzaghe.

Lacy was the victim of boxing media and some fans who always overhypes a guy who has very good or better KO power. Lacy brought nothing to the table besides power and it showed. Can't hate on Calzaghe for exposing him but also not going to act like Calzaghe beat a above average fighter either.

Lacy was also a victim, much like Bute, of being matched way too soft leading up to a tough opponent.

Before facing Calzaghe he had faced a steady line of face first no defense brawlers who were tailor made to make him look good (and he still looked vulnerable many times) in front of crowds that wanted to see him win.

When he came up against Calzaghe, in a hostile environment, it was like nothing he had ever seen before.

Same thing with Bute - he faced the who's who of no defense - no jab - no movement fighters leading up to Froch. Although Froch is not on Calzaghe's level as a boxer he is awkwardly effective on defense and has an excellent jab for controlling distance.

When Bute ran up against that - with no experience dealing with it - it quickly snowballed into a rout much like Lacy-Calzaghe.

Lacy was an ok fighter and Joe deserves alot of credit for dominating him because Lacy was so favored to win for the only reason I can see is that Joe is a skinny whiteboy from Wales and Lacy a muscled up tank with plenty of hype behind him.

Regardless of what people think about Lacy being favored by media/ fans it was basically a 50-50 fight at the sportsbooks.
