Canelo needs the eyes of casual fans if he wants to be the man after Floyd and Manny retire.
He also needs to prove that he is PPV-worthy. So far, all Alvarez has proven is that he belongs in the main event on Friday Night Fights. Alvarez has a huge ego and he thinks he is one of the top fighters in the world. Richard Schafer knows the truth -- that he is an overprotected hype job with a large fan following, like Chavez Jr. Schafer knows that Alvarez will be exposed when he gets in the ring with a quality fighter and he has tried to protect him until he can put him in the ring with Mayweather.

The fact is that Alvarez has no choice but to accept whatever Mayweather wants. Alvarez can draw loyal followers on regular HBO, but there is no way he can carry a PPV. Right now, there are only two fighters who can sell a PPV card by themselves -- Mayweather and Pacquaio -- and two -- Cotto and Julio Ceaser Chavez Jr. -- who can sell one with help from a quality opponent. So, unless Alvarez is going to fight one of these guys, he isn't fighting on PPV and earning the huge purses.

If Mayweather sells over a million PPV's in every fight, no matter who the opponent is, then he should accept this offer even if there is a good chance Canelo loses. I just want to see Canelo vs Trout.

Right now there is almost zero chance of that fight happening in the near future, possibly ever.
I think Golden Boy knows that without a credible draw (and as well liked as he is on these boards Guerrero brings in virtually no fan base) it could be an underwhelming PPV number without mexican fans tuning in for Canelo.
I think this is why you are seeing this power play by Canelo.
i've been arguing this point with people here!! it's strictly my opinion (yours) and yet they call me an idiot! ha ha.. good ****!!

I agree. I still think Schafer is going to pull a bait and switch and put Alvarez in the ring with someone like Ishe Smith on May 4 -- unless he is able to talk Winky Wright or Fernando Vargas out of retirement.

Saul really is doing a number on GBP/Floyd.

He's, like........hey, you wanna use me to prop up the Mayweather PPV? I'd rather not but OK, just give me the guarantee you're going to follow through with a September fight, cos me and my team aren't sure he's going to fight again so soon.

Oh, you're not going to guarantee that? That's fine, then there's no need for me to be on the undercard if we're not building towards the September date. Just let me headline my own card.

Call me when you've decided, ****.

He didn't say he wanted to be the main event on this card, but on his own card. Canelo is saying he doesn't like the idea of being on the undercard, so that he has a reason to ask for a guarantee Mayweather fight in Sept.

Just for perspective, the last time Floyd fought without Canelo on the undercard was Juan Manuel Marquez in September of 2009.
Marquez was a big name coming off the first two Pacquiao fights, Mayweather had not fought in almost 2 years, the Pac/Floyd hype had just barely started (really took off later that year after Pac beat Cotto) and it was on Mexican Independence day weekend.
That fight did barely over a million PPV buys, great for anyone else but not so great for a Mayweather fight.
If I am Golden Boy, I am not leaving anything to chance by leaving Canelo off this card. Likewise if I am Canelo I am not fighting on the card unless I have a signed agreement to fight Floyd provided I beat Trout. The only question is if Floyd will cooperate. My money says no.

Replace the bold with: pick us for a September match. That's how I see it.
