Canelo needs to fight at least a Carlos Quintana gatekeeper type and at least a top person in his division before he pursues that. Makes no sense to me right now other than trying to rush it to get done out of urgency and fear that Floyd will permanently retire soon like he says.

Then he'd take full criticism for making it look easy and ducking some other guy. People really do underestimate the guy's toughness and ring IQ.
But thats what you get for not being a KO specialist...

I really Like Cotto and was very pleased with his last performance.
I say Canelo stops Fraud Jr easliy and comfortably within the distance or at the very least by decision. Jrs legs are gone hes getting tagged much more and he doesnt seem to have very good punch resistance and on top of that his handspeed is significantly diminished
Hes definitley lost a step and a half.,Again any guy that gets pounded on by Cotto isnt going to be a threat to Canelo.
Im not jumping on "what was"Floyd has looked pretty unimpressive against less than top notch guys latley ,This remains a young mans sport.

He is also very poised to be such a young fighter. I honestly think that he could give Floyd problems at this stage the same way Cotto did. Floyd's experience would get him through it though. Right now, Floyd can do things in the ring that Canelo has never dealt with. But, that's only as long as Floyd stays sharp. The defense will always be there for him so he will never take a brutal beating, but the older he gets, the less sharper his offense will become. Once that happens, Canelo will be able to get a win. It would be parellel to Whitaker when he fought Oscar. You could see that Pernell was the more skilled fighter. But at that stage of his career, he just couldn't get off like he wanted to and Oscar got the decision. There honestly is no reason for Floyd to fight these young guys. He needs to fight Manny and Sergio and get out. Those guys are the best in the sport and all are around or close to the same age. They all are at the same stage of their career. Unstead of Canelo wanting to fight those established hall of famers, he should build his own legacy by fighting the top guys coming up with him. That is how those guys did it. Lara, Trout,Kirkland, and a few others would be excellent fights for him. Then you have Chavez Jr above him at 160 and guys like Berto, Bradley, and soon Khan beneath him at 147. These are young guys in their prime or near it that would bring more exciting fights. As great as Ray Leonard, Hagler, and Hearns were, they stayed away from a young talented Michael Nunn and fought each other. I think the same will happen with Manny and Floyd. What's the point in fighting this young lion when you have already set yourself in the history books? Cotto and Sergio would probably fight him, and those would be good fights. No matter how it plays out, as a devoted fight fan, I'll be there to watch.
We grow the most where we struggle the most... but i get it. You might say, Floyd is in an ocean with bigger fish, whereas Canelo is in a pond. but look at it this way. We'll use your likening of Canelo to a 'young lion' metaphorically.
by nature, the leader of a lion pride is challenged not by older lions, but by younger ones. Floyd has done that. but to say Canelo should not be challenging him is to tell a bird it shouldn't fly or a dog it shouldn't bark.
The age of 'ready' is a state of mind because we associate age with experience. Tyson smashed that theory! Right now we're gettin' splashes in the pool of boxing where we should be C'in canon balls!!
Canelo IS his own legacy and he's outgrown his pond. His options rite now are which pride leader to fight.
It's ocean time Canelo. Canon ball!!

From the article:"He was sharp, used the jab, body shot, I can't complain. It's not the kid's fault. Whoever they pick, he fights them."
J'Leons (lack of) credentials makes me take his assessment with a grain of salt. But his comment (in bold) is truer than maybe even he realizes--Alvarez did fight whoever was selected for him. The question is: who were selected for him to fight, and not to fight?
