A lot of people were high on Russell, I even praised him months ago till he backed out of the Franco fight and fought a setup instead. All he had to do was fight Franco and he would get the respect. Backing out of a mandatory challenger position is weak as hell to instead fight a setup. You gotta be ***ing kidding.Last edited by richardt; 07-05-2012, 01:05 PM.

It's all well and good going in and putting beatdowns on bums. Let's see him do what Gamboa does and put those beatdowns on world level fighters. I'd like to see how Russell would react to be standing opposite a man in Gamboa who is as fast as he is, hits harder than he does and is more skilled than he is.
Less talk, more action.

Look. Gary Russell is a prospect. Not a belt holder, not a champion, not a contender, not a ppv headliner, not even a headliner. He's not ranked in the top 10 by Ring ****zine, the WBC, the IBF or the WBA.
He's very talented yet very raw. His defense is suspect, his reach is short and he hasn't fought a lot of rounds. He's a notch below a Meldrick Taylor type.
And what happened with TNT Taylor? He was unpolished, rushed and fed to the wolves young. He dazzled against the legend Chavez but took so many hard shots that not only cost him the biggest fight of his career but cost him his career at the age of 24.
And I bring up TNT because of the similarities in hype, handspeed, and lack of defense. But look at other guys who have been rushed: Fernando Vargas, David Reid.
Let this man take his time, build his brand, sharpen his skills and work his way up. He might be avoiding certain fights because he is simply not ready yet. His time will come when he will fight top contenders. He's still very green.
Let him develop before starting to criticize. So what if he says he's the best. Fighters should have that level of confidence.Last edited by -PBP-; 07-05-2012, 01:45 PM.

Originally posted by richardt View PostAgreed, but he shouldn't be saying he is better than every elite fighter, only to back out of fighting two fighters that are under that elite level, fighters that if he won, would put him there.
Now everybody is going to watch Gary Russell's next 4 or 5 fights.

I won't be watching until he fights a top ten fighter.
