Comments Thread For: Pacquiao: Ortiz Has a Big Chance To Beat Mayweather

NEW YORK — Manny Pacquiao gives Victor Ortiz a much better shot at upsetting Floyd Mayweather Jr. than the handicappers who’ve made Mayweather about a 6-1 favorite prior to their Sept. 17 fight in Las Vegas. [Click Here To Read More]

Didn't Pacquiao say the same about Shane Mosley? I think I kind of remember him saying the same about Mosley when Floyd fought Mosley.

Manny should give his honest opinion. We all already know Floyd's going to school Ortiz. Ortiz might have sparred with Pacquiao, but Ortiz comes forward with a mediocre defense, no jabs, and just power. He also has a questionable heart. Beating Andre Berto does not make us forget about Maidana.

Floyd has speed, accuracy, and defense over Ortiz. All Ortiz has is no jab and power.

I think Pac is being honest. He's giving Ortiz props, which in turn will help sell the PPV. Why would Pac lie to help promote a Mayweather fight? That alone tells you he believes Ortiz has a shot.

Personally, I don't think Ortiz has a prayer. Winning one fight against an unproven fighter in Berto doesn't automatically erase the bad loss to Maidana and his history of having a questionable heart. Plus, this will be Ortiz's first megafight and he may fold mentally just from the big event atmosphere. Whereas, Floyd will come in very confident.

Mosley had his chance, that 2nd round was everything he had and the closet Mayweather had ever come to being KO, a vintage Shane would have shook things up a bit more, went for the kill but instead he gassed out and was embarrassed the rest of the fight

              Go figure ?

              A funnier thing.....

Ortiz laid hands on Pac, and he beat the #3 guy on Manny's shortlist, and yet when offered that fight Arum said..... "Victor Ortiz is too green"?

The third best welter in the world is " too green " ?

Manny has never beaten a welter ranked that high, what gives ?

pac may be right, but floyd is not a come forward guy who would be impressed by opponent's punching power.
if you got that power you gotta utilize it ie. connect those power punches. which is difficult against a boxer floyd's caliber.
i hate arum, but he got the right assessment there. ring rust doesn't really do much to floyd, and ortiz is just the guy to make his comeback look good.
floyd beats him at the outside game easily, and won't allow ortiz to play the inside game, because it would cut into his comfort zone. that's really the only hope ortiz got.

Only way Ortiz will be able to beat Mayweather is if he manages to land some power shots in the first few rounds and get him down early, but once the fight drags on, Mayweather's gonna get into his zone and will start to pick Ortiz apart, guaranteed. Speedwise, Mayweather has the advantage. Ortiz is pretty slow in comparison and I think Mayweather's gonna simply jab/potshot him to death.

If I remember correctly, Mayweather did say that he's "not going to box" and will stand toe to toe with Ortiz. I think that's pretty interesting. Maybe he'll do what he did vs. Mosley and be more aggressive? Not sure if he'll follow through with that, though. We'll just have to see when the fight happens. But I'm tellin' ya, an aggressive Mayweather is pretty scary.

I don't trust Ortiz' will, he might quit, again, but this time if Floyd can run rings around him and Ortiz gets frustrated.

Of course, Ortiz has a chance if Floyd gets caught offguard somehow, like Mosley did.

My biggest problem with Ortiz is his mental ...
