Catch weights have been around since the beginning of boxing 'Irish boxing' was basically 2 guys any weight against each other... Boxing is a sport of warriors with skills, thus its called the sweet science, professionals, 105 to 255, have trained and garnered the strength and courage to enter the ring to battle...

Those who do sign contracts to fight at catch weights maybe 5,10 in this case 12 pounds 9 by contractual standards, are well aware of the risk... Some win Will Pep, SRR,etc, but because JMM got whooped abolish da ****, stop the press, hit the reset that didn't count... STOP it you guys are fans i box, Floyd, Juan, Victor box... weight aint a factor when the bell rings.............
Dont be ridiculous, boxing uses weight divisions, and catch-weights were originally conceived under the original divisional system where a small lightweight fighting a large welter would be outweighed by 15lbs.

FACT: now there is NO NEED WHATSOEVER for catch-weight bouts.

There are only two reasons to demand a catch-weight, either you are not good enough to compete with your opponent at his natural weight, or you are attempting to drain him to gain an unfair advantage.

But Floyd also clearly said that he wasn't going to make that, and it is clear that FMJ never intended to make that weight.

              When you're making $20 mil plus, the $600K isn't a draconian penalty.
              Just to clarify this situation......

The only weight penalty mentioned in the ORIGINAL contract specified that if Mayweather failed to make weight he would pay $500k per-pound, half of which was to be paid to the commission and the other half would go to Marquez.

Instead, Mayweather renegotiated the weight to 146lbs and paid a fee of $600k to Marquez. Floyd saved himself $400k, Marquez made an additional $100k, and the commission got nothing.

But I was under the impression that the contract renegotiation took place only 2-3 weeks before the fight?

That is exactly what happened, it was well-documented at the time.

Floyd has never been over 150 fight night that I know of. 149 now is normal for him, but go ahead and hope he is over-training! lmao!

Believe it or not, he will be as strong or stronger than Ortiz fight night. Remember everyone thought SSM would be his toughest test, and he would be stronger? Wrong again. Keep hoping.

Look at the difference weight cutting makes. DLH at 164 fight night against Floyd, vs DLH 149 fight night against Pac. I am surprised DLH made it to the 8th round. Roach said he looked like a ghost, and IV's couldn't even help. Roach also said the day before DLH couldn't even run one full lap around the track without stopping. But Pac fans say it was a great victory, and try to compare it evenly to Floyd fighting DLH a year and a half earlier, when DLH was strong and ready. Pac opponents will cut any amount of weight for big $.
Wrong, that definitely did not happen.

Mayweather approached Marquez and renegotiated the contract.

He can beat guys that are much bigger physically. He moved up manny divisions already. Of course hes a disciplined man who trains hard but i doubt Ortiz is lazy, hes just the bigger man and has to drain more weight.
Pacquiao for example is a guy who has to gain weight in training camp and eat tons of food because hes so small!
I do not believe that Mayweather could safely make 140.

You lay it out like it is, Lead.

I swear some of these guys that you're having to explain this to have no idea about boxing as a sport. I have come to the conclusion that many of the guys we debate are 16 years old.

                      Anyway, nice post.
