Is Joe Cortez a competent and fair referee?

    What do you think?

Is he crooked or just incompetent? Does he side with one fighter or the other?

Should he be permitted to work big fights?

I"m going no on all accounts.

    He's lost his credibility.

Gabe Montoya made some very interesting points in his mailbag today regarding Cortez's performance I hadn't thought about.

Simply - no. He's an egotistical self important spoiler.

Mayweather - Hatton = Brits/Europeans branded him incompetent and others said he wasn't the one landing clean shots and TKO Hatton.

Completely reversed when Brit Khan get's any Cortez babying treatment.

The ones that were telling Hatton fans to stfu because the ref was against Hatton are the ones complaining that Maidana, "wasn't aloud to do his thing"...

Cortez is still a joke and should retire.

Cortez just sucks. He's a poor ref.

First off, any time fighters arms get entangled, he breaks them up. No matter what. Watch any of his fights as proof - Khan-Maidana, Floyd-Hatton, Hopkins-Calzaghe, etc.

Further, he does ******ed *****, he lacks good judgment. Example - DQ'ing Soto after Soto destroyed Lorenzo and barely tapped him on the back of the head as he went down. And it wasn't that he DQ'd him, it's that, if you recall, it took Cortez literally over 5 minutes to figure out what to do, all the while poor Lorenzo is laying in the ring, clearly badly injured bleeding all over the place with his nose so badly broken it was on his cheek and he was not allowed any doctor/trainer to treat him until Cortez figured out what to do.

            That clearly shows incompetence.

We can go on and on with examples.

            This is the best option:
He's not crooked, he tries to be fair but he's incompetent

He means well and he's done great jobs in many of his fights, probably the majority...

Cortez really pissed me off on Saturday. I thought I'd be the only one that felt this way but when I came here and saw how much other people were complaining, well now it just solidifies what I thought. Normally I don't have an issue with him but man, I just don't get the motive for acting like that, throwing Maidana across the ring at the bell and other things.

                His agenda changes.

                Hatton no inside fighting.

                Hopkins excessive clinching.

Maidana allowed some inside fighting but constantly flipped the script.

                He's just soooooo old.

He's still better than some of our British refs who will stop a fight at the first hint of trouble. Our refs would have stopped Khan in the 10th, but at the same time would have have jumped in when Khan had about 12 seconds to finish Maidana after the knockdown.

                    It's actually all the same.

It's when the arms get entangled, even just one arm, he breaks them up, thus why some guys can do some inside fighting (as long as they aren't holding on to the bodies/arms/etc).

Also I thought Cortez did a horrible job in the dixon-balboa fight when 60+ year old balboa nearly died in the first round, should have stopped it

agreed there. who was that ref that did the calzaghe-manfredo fight? hopefully he retired.
