    Sugar Ray Leonard Haters thread

For all of you who hated or dislike Sugar Ray Leonard. Post your reasons here. I must admit that Ray was a very talented boxer and he had some great fights and you cannot take that away from him but here are my reasons for disliking Ray.

    1. He was very very afraid of Aaron Pryor. When I was a child I lived very close to the neighborhood that Ray Leonard lived in. I used to see him sometimes in the Chesapeake bay seafood house etc. Anyway Aaron Pryor was so determined to fight and beat Ray Leonard that he actually moved into Ray's neighborhood. He would go down to his house sometimes and call him out and Ray was soo scared. (Supposedly Ray even got a police restraining order against him because he didnt want any part of him) I know you all remember Pryor coming to Ray's press conferences and getting in Ray's face etc.

    2. He eluded some opponents or waited till the perfect time to get people. (When they got old, came off wars etc.) besides that his win over Tommy who I feel was beating the hell out of him for like 13 or 14 rounds was not cool. I mean let the man continue it's a championship fight.

    3. He was basically the golden boy of the 80's.

    4. More to come I am just too tired to type.

        hes a coke head.
        he cant punch for ****.
he needed every advantage he could get over hagler cuz he cant beat hagler under any other circumstance.
        he was an alcoholic.
he relied on paid off refs to stop fights.
        he was a sell out.
        he couldnt fight for ****.
he wouldnt give hagler a rematch.
he was inactive for ridiculous periods of time.
        he retired FIVE times.
he cheated his camp members out of their money.
he moved up in weight class to avoid fighting aaron pryor.
he was more of a showman than a boxer: BOXING IS NOT A SHOW, ITS A SPORT.

needless to say, i am a Sugar Ray Leonard hater.

I agree he stole it ( I had Leonard winning this fight though), he ran around Hagler and was vey effective. He can't go toe to toe with him , Hagler would have beat the living shiet out of him if he did. Leonard fought his fight and with damaged right and it was only his 2nd fight in 5 years, I have to give props. Hagler though was far more dominant and he never ducks nobody.

i dont hate ray leonard but let me tell ya ray came along when the boxing public was looking for another ali.

ray possesed those attributes physically and verbally.and a lot of times his badmouthing showed bitchfull spitefullness like *****boyfloyd uses.(i just put him down but believe floyd deserves to be pfp)

i'm 53 and was a young adult during the beginning of ray leonards rayne.

the way i see it the general public loved the hansome loudmouth, media appealing leonard.but a lot of boxing fans including me seen him as a charismatic boxer with great skills that got all the breaks.he got gifts from the judges in close fights.

he should of got a patent on laying low first two minutes of round then coming on strong last minute to steal round.or coming on strong first minute then running for two minutes.

he was and is good for boxing. and he was slippery enough not to get hurt that bad by using his head in wars.not like other slurring boxers like ali(who lost the best years of his boxing life and was still able to come back and rule with detriment to his old age),hearns, hagler, etc.

i'm sorry, but i was taken aback when i first started comming to these boxing sites and found that so many egzagerate leonards greatness.as i also feel about boxers like tyson,klitmoes,ottke...and others.

Leonard was too much of a sissy boy to be a real man like Hagler or Hearns or Roberto Duran. He got his ass kicked when he went mano-a-mano.

That's why I didn't like him. He could have been more respected even if he had suffered a couple more losses by going toe to toe.

He ruined alot of potentially good fights by dancing all around the ring the last 30 seconds of every round.

They should have put him and Hagler in a phone booth. Ray would have been hamburger.

Hearns beat his ass the second fight. Two knockdowns and Ray gets a draw. Give me a break

I guess he had to sell more 7-Up.

I hate Leonard just as much as any of you, however...

                1. Theres no ****ing way in hell that he was afraid to step into the ring with a natural 140 pound Aaron Pryor. The 147 pound Tommy Heanrs and even that grizzled form of Hagler that he fought were 1000x scarier/riskier fights than was Pryor. Remember, Leonard is one of the most complete fighters at 147 ever and Pryor had life and death struggles with a way-past-best Arguello and Dajuan Johnson until he knocked them out. Leonard would have beaten Pryor soundly. High risk, low-reward? Maybe...but Pryor was nowhere near the test that Tommy Hearns was at 147.

                2. Leonard wasn't a ***** puncher, he was just smart. He was actually an excellent puncher at 147...evidenced through his knockouts of Dave Green, Thomas Hearns, Wilfred Benitez, and and unbeaten Ayub Kalule at 154.

                  1. yes, he was truely afraid of aaron pryor. in an interview early in both careers, ray was talking about what he'll do: either stay at welter or move up. and as soon as aaron pryor was announced, pryor showed up, smiling and happy (for good reasons), knowing that a fight with leonard was all but official. as soon as they both met, face to face, leonard got nervous, addressed the audience and said it was "his show" and he was moving up, leaving aaron shocked, upset, frowning, and disgruntled. i saw the whole interview myself. leonard dodged pryor, period.

                  2. yes, he was a ***** puncher. there was not a single person who was KOd by leonard with one punch, or in the early of the fight with deadly force. people wouldve dodged leonard left and right if he had hearns' power. name one iron-chinned badass that leonard KOd.... no? 'nuf said.

"The problem with boxing ain't the fights, it's who ain't fightin' who." -that's the damn problem.

Leonard didn't really duck anyone outside the ring, but he did alot of ducking inside the ring. I guess it was his ****y style that really pissed alot of people off. Every dog has his day. Every dog gets his ass kicked now and then too.

Leonard in his prime was a bad cat, no doubt, but later on his career he tooted his own horn a bit much. Even after getting his ass thrashed by Terry Norris, he had the audacity to take the microphone and take the spotlight from Norris when it was Terry's time to shine, not Ray's. These are the kinds of things he did that made him a turn off for me.
